Lanips Mountains

Geography

The Lanips Mountains is the longest mountain range in Vellikka. It runs along the eastern side of the continent in line with the coastline.   The southern end is more hills than mountains, but they quickly grow into wide triangular peaks with deep steep valleys between them.   Two major rivers start along this mountain range. The River Rotnem is fed by two streams which spring from the south west side of the Lanips Mountains, and the River Ekul is also fed by several smaller rivers on the north east side of the range.   The mountain range is beautiful but is also, at times intimidatingly sever.
"... and when I see the Lanips, and I know I am home, I am filled with all the feelings that brings. The fear and love, and everything in between. For the first handhold of the Great Spirit is everything all at once. They will forever be my home and will forever be absolute."

Localized Phenomena

The Lanips Mountains are the area of Veillikka most often affected by The Shading. This is a natural event which happens every 25 years as a result of a solar event that causes vegetation to lose all colour before dying off suddenly. The following year the vegetation returns twice as vibrant and with twice the yield. It is thought this is where the mountains get their reputation for being both welcoming and dangerous.

Climate

The climate on most of Veillikka is quite mild, and that is true for the foothills of the Lanips Moutains. However, the higher into the Mountains you get, the more sever the climate and conditions become. The Mountains are perpetually snowcapped, and in the cooler months, that snow and ice stretches far down the cliffs and slopes, turning the whole range white.

History

Pre-Vellich Society

The Jakunguh tried to turn Vellikka into a holiday destination before the Vellich evolved enough to be recognised as sentient by the intergalactic community. They recognised the power of the beautiful mountains as a potential draw. They built several groups of holiday homes into the sides of the mountains and planned to offer a range of snow- and mountain-based activities.   Unfortunately, their attempt to create a holiday destination failed, and they abandoned both the project and the infrastructure they already had in place.

The first Place of Spirits in the Lanips Mountains was discovered in the foothills to the south of the range. 13 additional Places of Spirits have subsequently been discovered, some on the highest peaks, and several along the streams.
