Naming Traditions

Unisex names

Gender isn't a thing in Vellikka, so all names are unisex. People choose sounds that appeal to them, rather than words which mean something. If someone likes a name of someone who has passed on, they might adopt that name, or take the name of a respected elder and adapt it to suit themselves.

Family names

Family names aren't a thing, as the village is the family. But people do take on the name of the position they have chosen as a profession.   For example, Ikanta is a Storyteller and has the rank of Storykeeper, so they go by Ikanta Storykeeper. If they were visiting outside of Abna, their home village, they would be Ikanta Storykeeper of Abna.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

People understand the power of choice and the importance of stories. Community and working together is prized above all, and often the question isn't "What do I want?" but "What is best for us?"

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Vellich find beauty in things done well, that could be a story well told, a well-made meal, a well-ploughed field or a crash of a wave or a strong tree.

Gender Ideals

Gender is fluid and something people can choose, but most don't. The majority of Vellich choose to be gender-neutral and many will go through periods of being male and female in their lifetime.

Relationship Ideals

People may choose to be in a relationship and that might be sexual or asexual, romantic or aromantic depending on the preferences of the two, three or more people involved. Relationships rarely lead to children, although it has been known on rare occasions, this is considered the outlier rather than the norm.
