Where The Spirits Come From

Summary

There was once a Great Spirit, who wandered across the sky and observing all that came in their path. They saw the sun and the stars and the moons, and then they saw Vellikka  The Great Spirit spoke to the planet and Vellikka spoke back of its loneliness, of its longing for purpose and desire to belong. So, the Great Spirit left its marks across the land, leaving small parts of itself in the form of small spirits wherever it touched.    Soon, promised the Great Spirit, a people will come who will belong to you and you to them. They will make villages and grow strong while tending to you and giving back to you at every turn. And in exchange I have rewarded them with places of solace, small gifts that they will find and know that they are loved. That their planet loves them and that the spirits I have left will always listen to them.    With that, the Great Spirit left, to once more wander through the sky, to find more lonely planets to share its gifts with.

Historical Basis

There are many Place of Spirits locations across Vellikka, so many that it's not surprising that many Vellich have wondered who are the Spirits and where do they come from.   It was once hypothesized that the Spirits are simply the souls of Vellikkian ancestors, but this was quickly dismissed. The Vellich all know that their bodies and souls feed the ground when they die, and the Spirits know far more than any ancestor ever could.   Some Place of Spirits locations have turned up great treasures, like the Warmers and the Universal Translator and the Water Breather, and several contain maps of the stars. This is where they myth of Where The Spirits Come From originates.   The truth is that the Place of Spirits are holiday homes built by a race of aliens called the Jakunguh who tried to create a resort out of the island long before the Vellich were evolved enough to comprehend it. When their business venture turned south they abandoned the planet leaving behind their buildings and some of their technologies.

This was a great introduction to the world of Vellikka. The story is whimsical and creates a sense of wonder. I love that we're treated to a small hint about what the Vellikkian people believe happens to their spirits upon death.
