The Royal Palace

Now known as The Palace of the Senate, or occasionally the People's Palace, this building once housed the The Royal House of Nerevarn as well as serving as the base of governance for The Kingdom of Nerevarn. Since the revolution the Palace has been reorganised to form the Senate Chamber, the place of meeting for the Nerevarnese Senate to debate and vote, as well as provide an administrative base for the army, the treasury, the election staff, and the archives of both the Kingdom and Republic of Nerevarn .

Purpose / Function

When it was built, the Royal Palace served many functions including administrative hub, military base, archive, family home and centre of worship. While many still apply, some have become defunt - for example the Palace is no longer considered to be in any sense the property or home of the Royal House of Nerevarn. The religious function was likewise dropped after the Revolution, as it was entirely due to the connections with King Gabraeil and his legendary oath (said to have taken place on part of the site the palace now occupies) and therefore is no longer considered of particular importance. There is still a prominant department of Dianecht-devoted clerics in the Palace for historic reasons, but they no longer have any say in governance, and there is political pressure to abolish them altogether. The military barracks in the palace used to house the Royal Family's guards, especially those few chosen to be in The Nerevarn Royal Guard, but they now house the Senate Guard - a special unit based off the discepline and elite recruitment of the Royal Guard but whose loyalty is to the Senate - as well as officers of the Army of the Republic and City Guard, who also have their respective headquarters' inside the main complex. The main complex also houses the Library of Arcana and the Library of Records, as well as the Council chambers, the Treasury and the High Court.   Separated from these 'working' parts of the Palace are the Senators Quarters, previously the various state rooms, private residences and private chapels for the royal family and their servants and attendants. The royal family's private quarters, which were connected to the rest of the Palace only through the Senate Chamber (then known as the Great Hall), now form the two Praetors' suites as well as a number of state suites for visiting diplomats.

Architecture

The Great Tower, which is the tallest building in the Kingdom, contains the largest Carillion bell system in the known world.  Historically rarely played except on Royal feast days, it has stood fully silent since the Republic, as its famous tones ringing out over the city was a sound inextricably linked with the celebration of Royalty and the Divine protections over the city - a thing hard to imagine celebrating in these days of Republicanism, but once truly delighted in by most of the population.
The Heraldry of the Republic which now flies from the Palace, replacing the old Royal Standard.
