The Republic of Nerevarn

The sucessor nation to the now-defunct Kingdom of Nerevarn, which was overthrown in The Revolution a century ago.  It covers almost all the territory of the old Kingdom, except for the City-State of Verdorn, which broke away during the upheaval and established its independence.

Structure

The Senate is the ruling body of the Republic, elected every five years by Citizens in a simple one-adult-one-vote system. Two members of the Senate, the joint heads of state known as Praetors, are elected in alternate two-year elections (aka. one praetor role is up for election, then after two years, the other will be). They each have veto rights over any senate legislation whatsoever, but both vetoes must be deployed to take effect. If only one Preator uses their veto, the legislation must be put to another vote but can still be passed. Any citizen may stand for Preator, whether they are a Senator or not, but if they are not then they will automatically become a member of the senate if they are elected. Senators may keep their position as long as they are re-elected, but all citizens are limited to only one term as Praetor, no matter their lifespan.

Culture

Nerevarn is a very cosmopolitan nation, with many races and cultures co-existing peacefully.  Although predominantly human - that being the native population of the peninsula, at least on the surface - there are many other groups living in and fully integrated into the republic.  In general, as long as a group obeys the law, pays taxes and does not attempt to impose their ways on others, almost all ways of life are accepted and welcomed.  There is however - understandably - a powerful current of anti-authoritarianism in the still-relatively-young Republic, and therefore a wariness of anyone who shows signs of claiming any particular degree of power by birthright alone.

Religion

The Republic operates legally under a system of Freedom of Religion, in which worship of any deity or none is permitted as long as it does not violate the law - for example blood sacrifice is fine if it is your own, but not if you tied an unwilling victim to your alter and took blood by force.  That is the official position, but the social predjudice against the worship of evil gods (previously forbidden under the monarchy) persists.   The Worship of Dianecht is still the largest religious group in Nerevarn after millenia of dominance, but significant populations of Namiri, Asarian and Thean devotees exist throughout the republic.  While Goratha is still very much a presence, Verdorn was always the centre of her following under the Kingdom, and upon the separaton of the city from the rest of the peninsula during the Revolution and the subsequent formation of The Free City of Verdorn, most gorathan worship has moved to the various religious centres there.

Peace and Free Trade

During the revolution Verdorn - previously part of the Kingdom of Nerevarn - split from the rest of the peninsula and formed the Free City, and independent city-state.  Although the Republic harbours some minor resentment over not having claim to all the territory of the monarchy it replaced, there is a generally friendly relationship between the two nations, seeing each other as fellow rebels against the same tyranny.

Peaceful Co-existence

Although the two are not officially allies, and there is some suspicion on both sides owing to their history as previously merged entities, there has never been any agression displayed by either party.  Both trade and movement of people are free flowing.

Non-aggression Pact

The Republic has never been on good terms with Sarayne, partly because of the inherant opposition to the insitution of Monarchy (an insitution still very much alive and well in Sarayne), but also because of the strong blood ties between the Nerevarnese Monarchy and their northern neighbours.  The last King of Nerevarn was the nephew of the then-Queen of Sarayne.  When he was overthrown and killed there was a very real possibility of war, but careful diplomacy and the reality of the mutual benefits of peace prevailed, and there has been a century of begrudging co-existence.

Enemies, claimants to the same territory

The Republic was born from The Revolution which overthrew the Kingdom.  Functionally, the Kingdom no longer has any territory and is reduced to an entity in-name-only.  However, there are still some powerful allies which support the Kingdom and which make it still a viable threat if the fates aligned.

Enemies

The Royal House as an organisation, now mostly scattered, regards the Republic as an illegitimate entity which defies the will of Dianecht and his divine commandment that the Royal House shall always rule Nerevarn.  The Republic regards them in turn as authoritarian tyrants who demand power without mandate from the people.
