Getting Greevil

Levels

This adventure has been designed for Ultra Modern 5 and is set within the Urban Arcana world setting. Getting Greevil is a short scenario for an average party level 8. To run this adventure, you will need the Ultra Modern 5 source book, the D&D 5th edition Player's Handbook and the D&D 5th edition Dungeon Master's guide.  

Background

Greevil Toothbreaker is a well loved goblin that runs the Goblin Nook within Onureth Taoul, the kobold village within the under ground Seattle water ways. He has a great deal of knowledge about the goblins, the kobolds and team 8. Team 1 has kidnapped him so that they can get information and so that they can hopefully draw out team 8 who they believe to be hiding within Onureth Taoul. The adventure is designed with the assumption that the heroes are part of team 8 which is a unit of agents that have gone rogue from the Shadow Investigations Unit.    

Character Hooks

As the GM, you know best how to involve your players and their heroes in an adventure. You can use the following adventure hooks to spur your imagination, modifying them as necessary to make them appropriate for the characters’ interests.
  • If they are part of team 8, it is in their interest to rescue Greevil. Saving him will further their relationship with the goblins as well as reduce the risk of Team 1 getting information from Greevil.
  • If they are not part of team 8, they can be asked to rescue Greevil by the goblins. Team 8 is other wise engaged or their location is unknown. Either way, the goblins had to seek others to help them with rescuing Greevil.
  • Greevil's brother Deld is connected to the Cthulhu Gang. He could request assistance from Qhall who could then hire the party to rescue Greevil.

Beginning the Adventure

The party is in Goblin Nook, it is early in the afternoon.
A kobold bursts into the room and scurries over to where Deld is sipping on his coffee and trying to wake himself up. Speaking loudly in broken common, the kobold declares, "Emergency! Goblin not safe!" and shoves a crumpled envelope into Deld's hands. The kobold gestures for Deld to read the note while inarticulately shrilling at him. Deld pats the kobold on the shoulder and says "I'm reading it. I'm reading it." Deld reads the note, then looks about the room in distress.
Deld will approach the party if they do not approach him. He will give them the note to read and a photo.
Deld can be used to fill the party out if there is a need for this. Other wise, he will remain with the other goblins in an effort to keep them calm and keep them from trying to rescue Greevil themselves since this would clearly lead to their deaths. Deld will allow the party to use his van if they need transport.

Sodo Warehouse

If the players do any investigation into the warehouse itself, they will find that it is owned by Draco Industries as is most of the surrounding properties. There isn't anything suspicious or notable about the warehouse itself. It is used to store materials for making cybernetic implants.

Description (South)

The concrete building is a single story. It is a smaller facility with 2 truck unloading bays. Both bay doors are closed. There is also an external loading dock with a truck parked near by. This loading area is also closed. There are three doors here. One that a half-orc female is standing in front of it. There are MP Officers milling about the area as well. There are three large chemical tanks on the eastern side of the building with a tank truck parked next to them. There is one door on the western side of the building with a MP officer standing in front of it.
 

Description (North)

The concrete building is a single story. Bins and wooden pallets are stacked along the wall. There is a stairwell that leads up to the roof of the building. Next to the bottom of the stairs there is a door that leads into the building. There is a human male standing in front of it. There is a small truck parked near the building. There are three large chemical tanks on the eastern side of the building with a tanker truck parked next to them.

Strategy

  The General Plan   Team 1 will be waiting at Sodo Warehouse for Team 8. Clarissa and Millard will remain there with Greevil until 8p at which time they will assume that team 8 isn't coming and will kill Greevil.   Defending the Warehouse   There is an entrances into the warehouse on both the north and south (the south has 3 that are all next to each other). They will each cover one of these. The entrance on the west side will be covered by a Military Police. They will leave Greevil in the office with his hands cuffed behind his back being guarded by Military Police. They have Military Police present as support for this operation. There are 6 Military Police on each side of the building.

Description

These are the standard trained personnel for the Military Police. They generally handle the patrolling of the city.


Crouch.

The officer can spend 30 feet of movement to have advantage on its assault rifle attacks until the end of this turn.

Actions

Multiattack.

The officer makes two combat knife attacks or two assault rifle attacks.

Combat Knife.

Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) piercing damage.

Assault Rifle.

Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 200/800 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+3) piercing damage.

  They are in communication with each other at all times through their cybernetic radio communicators. Thus, once the party attacks they will alert each other. If the party attacks both sides of the building at the same time, Clarissa and Millard will stay put and guard the entrances to the building. They will fire upon the approaching party and allow the Military Police units to close in on them from behind. They will reinforce the other group if the party falls or flees on their side of the building.   If the party attacks on one side of the building, the one not being attacked will move through the building to back up which ever of the two is being attacked, leaving the Military Police to defend the other side of the building. Once they are together, Millard will focus his protective efforts on Clarissa who will focus on laying down damage. They will have the Military Police close in around the party from behind.   Fleeing They will not die for this mission. If they fall below half hit points, they will attempt to flee. They will leave Greevil behind. They will call a retreat order to any Military Police still standing. If they cannot flee and they fall below a quarter hit points in their attempt, they will surrender to the party.

Finding Greevil

Once the players have addressed the threats, they can easily find Greevil who has been stowed in the office.
When you open the door, you find Greevil. He looks much the same as is did in the photo. He looks up as the door opens and begins to cry when he sees a familiar face. "I thought I was going to die," Greevil sobs.
A medicine check DC 10 will reveal that he has been roughed up, but is pretty much unharmed. The damage that was caused to him was superficial and intended to inflict pain rather then injury. It looks like they might have been trying not to cause him any real harm while they were roughing him up.  
"I'm sorry. I thought I was being careful. I promise that I didn't tell them anything. Even when they hit me!" Greevil says.
He will hug who ever unbound him and cry some more.  

Negotiations

Millard

He is not interested in anything the players have to say. He doesn't care about Greevil and will cause him no further harm once he has gotten Team 8's attention. However, once he sees the party arrive, he will attack them with the intention of killing them. His mission is to kill Team 8 and he isn't interested in anything beyond his orders.

Clarissa

Once the party arrives, she also will cause Greevil no harm. He was a means to an end and once they have Team 8's attention he no longer needs to be a hostage. She always liked Greevil and regrets that he was the goblin that they were able to nab. She is open to talking to the party and hearing what they have to say. Everything that she has been told about Team 8 doesn't add up and she would like to give them a chance to tell their side of the story before they are killed. But she will need to be convinced. If told that Kamil is still alive and promised to see her, she will disengage her unit of Military Police and leave the area. If they do in fact have her see that Kamil is alive, she could be converted to their side.

Possible Conclusions

Greevil Dies

If the party takes to long and waits until after 8p or doesn't go to the warehouse, Greevil dies and Team 1 moves on. If they go after 8p they will find Greevil's body in the office.

All Enemies Killed

If the party manages to kill all the enemies presented to them, they will be rewarded with some loot on the Team 1 members. They will find Greevil in the office. He is roughed up and bound, but ok.

Team 1 Escapes

It is likely that Team 1 will escape to cause more trouble in the future. The party will find Greevil in the office. He is roughed up and bound, but ok.

Successful Negotiations

Clarissa believes the party and leaves the area. She will meet with them later to try to see that Kamil is in fact still alive. The party faces off with Millard with the results either being that they kill him or he escapes. The party will find Greevil in the office. He is roughed up and bound, but ok.

Solid adventure, well motivated, and I like how the story ties of Team 1/Team 8 can change the outcome of the plot. I'd probably be tempted to add a third party or complication, but in this case I think it is not strictly necessary. Nice touch with the antagonists not really wanting to hurt Greevil, and I quite like the maps. Well done!
