The Cathedral Catacombs

The religious district of Ur is treated like the Red Light District of any other city. At night, shame-faced denizens skulk through the streets searching for spiritual satisfaction. The necessary acts of worship are performed in dark twisting alleyways or basements filled with red smoke.
Everyone does it, of course. But to do it in public would be seen as dreadfully uncouth. After the devastation wrought by the Godswar, worship is seen as something best kept behind closed doors.
As a result, the Cathedrals of Ur are built down instead of up. They extend deep into vast ornate sub-basements, filled with incense smoke and fractured light from lamps hung behind stained glass windows. Patrons enter a plain-looking shop or home above-ground, give the required sign, and are ushered through into the labyrinthine underground cathedral below. At many services, the flock wears ornate masks of clay or bone. Names are rarely used.
In the world above, people show their allegiance to one god or another with secret signs - the way they braid their hair, or the symbols they draw in the dirt with their sandals.
During the invasion of He Who Reigns the Catacombs was valliantly defended by the Synod. Following their implimentation as a formal Order they were granted space within the Catacombs out of which they may operate.
