Smoke District

Sphere: Academic   Metalworking is a venerable craft in the city of Ur. This close to the Maelstrom, metals resonate with primal energies, allowing them to be shaped into much more than just solid metal shapes. Ur-forged artefacts can heat and cool themselves, change shape, and even sing. The Smoke is filled with forges and workshops where miraculous creations are forged and finished - from hinges and hooks to swords and armour. In the evenings, the district mostly goes quiet as the population gathers in the Labourer's Mess, although some more dedicated forges carry on late into the night.   The Cult of Smoke founded the Ashwork Smithy before the Godswar, to build the most perfect instruments of death ever seen in the multiverse. By the time the war had finished, most of those weapons had been lost, along with the secrets of their creation. The network of artisans that grew up around the ruins of the Ashwork had a much broader and more mercantile focus, although the Cult of Smoke still invests significant funds into developing new weapons and researching old ones.

Guilds of the Smoke

The Guilds of the Smoke were established during the First Republic to handle the city's trade with other worlds, and granted various monopolies to ease their way. While they lost much of their official power during the Steel Rule, they retained their membership and now have control of the secrets of Ur-forging, enabling them to wield significant power over the various forges and smithies of the Smoke. They congregate at Advocate's Hall to coordinate their efforts in keeping the Smoke prosperous and influential.

Future of the Smoke

The district is currently modernising, with new magical devices and Negation Crystals that come from the colonies. This is causing friction between the workshop owners, who are developing forging techniques more precise, faster and more powerful than the current manual processes, and the employees who fear for their jobs.
