Mire of the lost souls

The corrupt swamp at the southern tip of the continent. Swarms of insects cover the land often attacking those who journey through, Most travelers either never return or die of illness shortly after.  

Undead swamp

The Swamp itself comes alive, well undead, at night with the souls of all those who've died in it's waters reaching up to claim the living that it detects, those that stay quite seem to pass unhindered for a time.

Geography

A thick corrupt swamp stretching from the foothills of Ered Mithrin to the coast. Few paths actually go through the swamp. Though several clean freshwater rivers run into the swamp all become tainted from some unknown source. The whole area is covered in Void stone. In the center of the swamp lies the ruins of Hope with other ruined cities dotted around, including the Illithid city of Vioddoll. On the southern at the old site of Voidcape stands a patch of blasted red bedrock. During the months of Penem and Beziel the Mire is in darkness with the sun unable to rise above the mountains.

Ecosystem Cycles

Penem and Beziel see the number of undead increase while both Bullywug and Gruung seem to disappear for these months.

Localized Phenomena

Void stone that is found in this area seems to corrupt all life meaning nothing stays dead for long. Magic also seems more vibrant here often making spells more powerful or requiring less power.

Fauna & Flora

Mostly devoid of intelligent life the swamp is full of snakes, amphibians, and insects. Though Bullywugs, Gruungs, and Yaun-ti have been found in small communities these are never very big and tend to stay closer to the edge. Rumors also say of a Kobald settlement somewhere in the ruins of Voiddoll. Undead also plague the whole area at night.

Natural Resources

Wood from the forest does need to be treated. Void stone is used by wizards for some spells or artifacts. meat from the few animals in the area.

History

Once a large plain home to not only the Illithid city of Vioddoll, but later the rebellion Cities of Hope and Aten. The mire started growing shortly after the battle of Shadowbrook eventually claiming the cities. The divine empire built the outpost of Rulfim's shield to keep the mire in check but that was claimed in just under a century.

Tourism

It is said only three types of people come to the Mire of lost souls, Adventures eager to prove themselves, eager to die more like. Treasure hunters looking for their big score in the ruins, adding to its defense, and those who wish to escape society for some reason, quite often a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

    Once a lightly forested plane is now a swamp littered with trees in various stages of decay.
