Garanya

Imagine how big our language would be, had we not lost thousands of us in that disaster. Maybe the continent would be called Ruugaburi instead!
— Garanya speaker
Garanya is the native language of the Dyiiladuunawa and related groups, most frequently spoken in south-eastern Thurásin. The primary dialect of Garanya is derived from that spoken by the citizens of Dyiiladuun, prior to its destruction.

History

Garanya, literally 'Our Language', has been spoken in some form in south-eastern Thurásin for thousands of years. Historical evidence suggests it is distantly related to the Nyikkishong language not far north of it, though their divergence occurs long before written records and no mutual intelligibility remains.   Prior to and during the eras of Beginnings and Continuance in the Thurásin Standard Calendar, Garanya was one of the most widely spoken languages and had a status as a lingua franca, owing to the prominence of the country of Dyiiladuun. This status was lost after the destruction of the country in 28 Continuance. While still common, the lost of many of its speakers in the disaster and the forced emigration of the survivors into non-Garanya-speaking countries diluted it substantially.   The number of speakers has fluctuated overtime, as many needed to learn Nyikkishong and Vaitsärriishal in order to live in their new homes. Nyikkishong in particular has been a common second language for Garanya speakers for eras, owing to cultural familiarity and the prominence of the Nyikkishep throughout Thurásin beginning in 59 Redemption. Even after their empire collapsed, many of the Dyiiladuunawa were loyal to it.   Garanya's biggest moment recently has been in use in communicating with the survivors of the Dyiiladuun Fleet from Abravost, one of whom spoke the directly related language of Yulemtan. Its potential to be the bridge between the two distant continents of Thurásin and Abravost has caused a minor explosion in individuals trying to learn Garanya or Yulemtan in order to be prepared for when contact is properly established.

Connection

Despite the excitement around Garanya's potential to be a lingua franca between Abravost and Thurásin, this is only somewhat plausible rather than a certainty. While it and Yulemtan are closely related, being derived from the dialect spoken in Dyiiladuun at the time of its destruction, over a thousand years of isolation has left the two with fairly low mutual intelligibility. Everyone struggling to learn modern Garanya has their pick in the wrong mountain - its old Garanya which would be more useful.   Despite that, Garanya, Yulemtan or the Abravosti language of Vostan are well poised to become the language of communication between the two continents, once such contact as established.
