Crafting Items
A character can use the required Artisan's tools to craft a consumable or piece of equipment. This can be done at any time during downtime activities, or during a long rest. However, if you choose to craft during your long rest, you cannot do any other activities, such as foraging for food or keeping watch. During a long rest, you can craft a piece of equipment or a consumable, provided you have sufficient materials.
To craft an item, you must roll a check with the toolset used to craft that item. On the
Toolsets page, you can see which items a toolset can be used to craft, and what attribute is rolled for the test.
Craftting Consumables
Consumables are
Brews,
Compounds,
Potions,
Poisons,
Spell Scrolls and
Ammunition. These are crafted by spending materials of the corresponding rarity and a flat crafting price. When crafting you choose a consumable to make, roll a check with your toolset, and the result determines how much of that consumable you create.
- 9 or lower: Create 1 item
- 10 - 19: Create 2 items
- 20 or higher: Create 3 items
Craftting Equipment
Equipment can be
Weapons,
Armour,
Shields,
Foci,
Wands, and
Fabrials. Each piece of equipment has a
rarity level and a
tier.
Rarity
The rarity level determines the strength of enchantments that a piece of equipment can have. The level is determined by the rarity level of the material used to craft the equipment, but it can be upgraded later with higher level materials. There are five levels of rarity, with the strength of the enchantments increasing with higher levels:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Very-rare
- Legendary
Tier
A piece of equipment has a tier, which determines the maximum number of enchantments that it can have. Higher tier pieces of equipment can have more enchantments on the same piece of equipment. An items tier is determined by the crafting check made when it is crafted. It can be increased by upgrading the item with another material of the same rarity.
- Tier 1: one enchantment
- Tier 2: two enchantments
- Tier 3: three enchantments
Crafting and Upgrading
Both crafting an item, and upgrading that item's rarity or tier require a crafting check. This check is made with the required toolset, and uses a material of the desireable rarity and a flat crafting price. These prices are determined by the rarity level of the material used in the crafting, and can be found in the Item Enchantment table.
Crafting
The item crafted has a rarity level corresponding to the level of the material used in the crafting. The tier of the item is determined by the result of the crafting check:
- 9 or lower: Tier 1, Item has one enchantment
- 10 - 19: Tier 2, Item has two enchantments
- 20 or higher: Tier 3, Item has three enchantments
When an item is crafted, you can choose a number of enchantments up to the maximum determined by the tier. These enchantments must be of item's rarity level or lower.
The crafting price of a new item includes a price for the enchantment. All items require an additonal crafting price for creating the item from scrach, which can be found on the page for that item. A mundane item without enchantments does not pay the enchantment price.
Upgrading
The item can be upgraded to increase its rarity or tier. Increasing the rarity requires a material of the next rarity to upgrade the item, and allows you to replace a number of enchantemts with new enchantments of a higher rarity. Increasing the tier requires a material of the same rarity as the item, and allows you to add or replace a number of enchantments up to the maximum determined by the new tier.
- 9 or lower: Increase rarity, replace one enchantment
- 10 - 19: Increase rarity or +1 tier, add/replace two enchantments
- 20 or higher: Increase rarity or +2 tier, add/replace three enchantments
The crafting price for upgrading an item is determined by the rarity of the used material, as depicted in the Item Enchantment table.
Crafting bonusses
A crafting check can always be attempted as long as you have the required toolset and a safe place to work. It is possible to create a legendary blade with nothing but a portable forge and a few hours of work. However, some places might provide a bonus to crafting such items. Crafting items in a small workshop or larger facilities will add a bonus to the crafting roll, making it more likely you create items with a higher quality or quantity. There are two levels of workshop that add bonusses:
- Small Workshop: +2 bonus to craftin check
- Larger Facility: +5 bonus to crafting check
A small workshop can be found in small to medium sized towns, although specialised shops can be rarer, depending on the location. These assets correspond to a Comfortable
Wealth level. A larger facilities are mostly found in big cities, although most cities specialize only in a couple of products at most. These assets correspond to a Well Off
Wealth level. You can always use a workshop you own if you have access to it. Using someone else's facilities might require you to negociate a fee.
