Poisons

Poisons are substances that are applied to creatures and induce a potentialy harmful effect. Working with poisons is dangerous, as accidentally poisoning yourself is a common hazard for the untrained. Therefore, poisons can only safely be used by characters that are proficient in the poisoner's kit. Poisons can be aplied through skin contact, inhalation, injestion, injection, or injury. Depending on the specific poison, it can be added to food, water, or clothing, blown as a powder, dispersed as a gas, or used to coat weapons and ammunition.
  • Contact: The poison is a paste, oil, or powder that has to make contact with the target's skin. The poison will take effect after a certain amount of contact time. These kinds of poison are either applied directly to the skin, or applied to an object such as clothing that allows for prolonged contact with the target. Contact poisons can only be aplied directly to a target if that target is incapacitated.
  • Inhaled: These poisons are powders or gases that take effect when inhaled. Blowing a powder or gas subjects creatures in a 5-foot cube adjactent to the user to the poison's effect. A gassious poison can be stored in a vial, and the user can throw the vial at a target within 20 ft. They make a ranged attack against the target, treating the vial as an improvised weapon. The target nor any creature near the target is subjected to the poison if the attack misses. Regardless of delivery method, the resulting cloud dissipates immediately afterward, lasting only to the end of the turn. Holding one's breath is ineffective against inhaled poisons, as they affect nasal membranes, tear ducts, and other parts of the body.
  • Injested: These poisons are powders or liquids that have to be swalowed by the target. They can be applied to food or drink. The larger the amount of food or drink, the more doses of poison are required for the poison to have an effect. One dose of poison is enough to poison one meal, or one liter of water. Diluting a poison may reduce the poison's effectiveness or fail to produce an effect all together.
  • Injury: These poisons have to be injected directly into the target's bloodstream through an open wound. They often come as liquids or oils to coat weaponry or ammunition. An attack must deal an amount of piercing or slashing damage to inject the poison. Otherwise, the poison has no effect.
Crafting poisons requires a Poisoner's kit and proficiency in the toolset, a safe location to work uninterupted during crafting, a material of the corresponding rarity and funds to craft the poison. Some poisons require specific materials. If so, these materials are noted in the poisons list. If no material is listed, any material of that rarity can be used to craft that poison. Crafting costs and market values are depicted in the Crafting Consumables Table.
