A Little Bit of Diplomacy Plot in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

A Little Bit of Diplomacy

The team get to travel to Anselma's word (Wynsumheord). They have been tasked by the Council of Eschbach (with a nudge from the Frankish Empire) to set up diplomatic relations / trade deal / military alliance with her people. The local religions might try to get involved too.

Plot points/Scenes

The team are made aware of a messanger arriving to Eschbach's council asking about setting up a diplomatic relationship to Anselma's people, with a peace treaty, exchange of technologies, trade deal, military alliancxe, and possible religious exchanges too. The council looks to Grimmaz & Anselma for guidance & thinks its potentially a good idea.   A diplomatic envoy called Harald Richomeres will also be present and will join them. He has been chosen to speak on behalf of the Crown and advise the Eschbach party. At the same time he has been given permission to speak on behalf of the Church & allied religions underscored by the Archbishop of Aachen, a man called Richleu. They will need to speak to the leaders of the Sundorwickians (like Kyustala), and see what they are willing to offer, what they will accept and what they don't want.   The following will be mentioned:
  • a peace treaty between Exhbach & Frankish Crown (latter being the 'stakeholders' of it with Eschbach being the main point of contact between the peoples), and the Sundorwickians.
  • a possible military alliance on top of that if they should want it.
  • sharing of technology, sciences, and other related benefits.
  • permanent envoys travelling between the two meeting regularly roughly once a month sharing intelligence, news and any possdible problems.
  • trade caravans between both peoples supplying goods by barter or coin with prices set by & agreed by both parties.
  • religious exchanges between individual faiths. This may cause some conflict in both short term or long term depending on how either party views such an exercise.
  • cultural exchanges may be offered too, allowing for either side to learn more about the respective parties.
Some other points may be raised too. These may or may not be accepted, and as follows:
  • magic items & magic. Spellcasters may want to learn of the magical nature of any found in Wynsumheord. Willing to supply information on such techniques available in Frankia to the Sunderwickians. Magical items can be bought, sold or traded if wanted.
  • Military presence. The Franks will likely want to set up some type of military outpost there to 'protect their assets', and this needs the authority & permission of the Sunderwickians. The Crown will pay for this and the troops would be under Frankish law & punished accordingly to their laws if they transgress any local laws. If need be, the Sunderwickians can call on them for aid if & when there is any threat to them. Could missionaries be allowed through?
  • religious conversion. How would the Sunderwickians feel about any of their people coverting to Frankish religions? And vice versa. Would there be religious tolerance & would they look to covert Frankish citizens.
  • any minor laws that may be clash bewtween the cultures.
  • would the Sunderwickians be open to become a protectorate of the Frankish Empire? And would they allow settlers to go to their lands? Would some look to come through to Frankish lands?
  • further, would they be open to being recognised as allies of the Franks and allow the Eschback coat-of-arms be used to identify them as allies? A 'passport' of sorts could be drawn up to allow free travel between both and a further mark to show they are affiliated with the Franks & the Frankish Crown throughout the lands of others? Would it only work inside each other's territories? Do they have any such markings that could be used instead or alongside the Frankish markings?
This could take them a good number of days to argue out any points, and both sides are likely to agree on some points but not all. They may go between both lands to argue it out. All the while there is the chance of spies / assassins from either side to worm their way in and try to disrupt it all.   After this is concluded then written versions will be drawn up & at least three versions created. One will be kept at Eschbach, one at Aachen with the Crown, and one with the Sunderwickians.       The diplomat Harald can be 'persuaded' that troops aren't needed, and the Burgeaters need a few additional troops. Whatever Anselma & her people want out of it is to be accepted, and whatever the town needs they will get.   At the same time, Grimmaz will get word from Mikhael Andolf that the goblins have been playing up a bit with highway robbery but have been given a good kicking to knock them in line, and have promised to only target de Rais holdings & allies. The Goblin Chief also asked if Grimmaz, Eleia and maybe the others will ask for the 'Goblintown' will be recognised by the Crown and any goblin it's bounderies be treated as allies if not citizens. He wants his people to live peacefully and start with working in the small caves that's found around the 'town'. They want farming to start too, and regular military excursions are welcome to stop any problems arising.   Eleia may want to check on the wyvern after it escaped at one stage & killed a kittn eating it. She may want to stop it getting to the griffon.   Nine finds a bit of the wall of the tower gives way with what looks like a corpse walled up when alive. It seems overlooked by the workers who accidentally damaged it when repairing the rest of it. A small nick up at the top allowed a bit of water to get in and wreak the work. The corpse seems to move & spreads disease. The workers had repaired it initially thinking nothing of it but Ragnar, Samuelle & Jean Luc has fallen ill and started to try biting others while wasting away while trying to cannibal living people. May start a zombie plague, especially when they die. Fleas seem to have escaped from the same and may cause the same.
