Education

Wong attended a secular school in Kathmandu until he was 10, when his father was appointed Sanctum Master of the Hong Kong Sanctum.

He continued his secular education in Hong Kong until he turned 16, when he dropped out of state education to begin his magical training at Kamar-Taj under Ashake, then Master of Novices, and the Ancient One.

After completing his novitiate training he returned to Hong Kong to train with August Wu, a specialist in Hong Kong's unique magical tradtion.

In 1997, he decided he wished to focus his studies on magical books and texts, and was accepted as the apprentice of Master Sargor, the Kamar-Taj Librarian.

Employment

In 2007, following Master Sargor's retirement, Wong was appointed as the new Kamar-Taj Librarian.

He held this position continuously until the death of Stephen Strange in 2018, when Wong as chosen as his successor as Sorceror Supreme .

Accomplishments & Achievements

Even before he became Sorceror Supreme, Wong was considered one of the most powerful magic users in the world, and an expert in multiple magical traditions thanks to his ecclectic education.

With the help of his mother, Ngawang Yeshe, he was responsible for banishing the immortal Blood Sorceress Semiramis from reality. He also took part in battles against Cthon, Hela, the Many-Angled Ones, and Thanos.

He was selected as one of the Infinity Watch after the death of Thanos, being entrusted with the protection of the Time Stone.

Mental Trauma

While he was an apprentice in the House of Wisdom, his fiancee Imei Chang was killed by the demon Nil, who then impersonated Imei for several days, in order to gain access to the powerful magical books housed in the House of Wisdom.

When Wong uncovered the deception, he killed Nil, and abandonned his post at Kamar-Taj to hunt down Nil's mistress Semiramis, who had ordered the murder. This quest lasted almost 2 years, during which time he had no contact with any of his friends or family, as he believed they would attempt to stop him from taking his revenge.

Intellectual Characteristics

Wong is extremely intelligent and highly educated, being raised by two of the Masters of the Mystic Arts' intellectual powerhouses, and trained by some of the most powerful sorcerors of the 20th century. He grew up bilingual, and has learned an additional seven languages to a high level.

He is an acknoledged expert on creole or fusion magic (the combination of disparate, otherwise incompatible, magical styles and traditions into a combined practise), and is a highly sought after teacher on the subject.

He has written 3 books, a guide to creating fusion magic, a history of magic in Hong Kong, and an analysis of the cookery sections of the Book of Cagliostro. He has also written monographs on a number of magical texts, including De Vermis Mysteriis, the Parchment of Power, and the Book of the Vishanti.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Having grown up within the Masters of the Mystic Arts, Wong Ruìkǎn has close ties to many of the members. He is a former student of August Wu, and remains close to both her and her daughter Alice Wu. He and Sara Wolfe were introduced by Imei Chang and became good friends.

He mentored Stephen Strange during his training, and they became close friends. Wong was influential in getting Stephen appointed as Sorceror Supreme.

Since she saved his life during the Empirikul Invasion, he has become good friends with Zelma Stanton, and they have bonded over their shared loved of books.

He has fought with the Avengers multiple times, and has a good working relationship with many of the members, although he is not as close with them as Strange, since he prefers to focus his attention on magical matters.

Family Ties

Wong grew up in a close-knit family. Although they are now scattered, with his mother spending most of her time in the Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption studying the magic of Raggadorr, and his sister living in New York City, they remain close, and spent holidays, birthdays, and other celebrations together.

His father lives in Kamar-Taj with Wong, and is currently the assistant Kamar-Taj Librarian.

Religious Views

Wong was raised Tibettan Buddhist, although his study of magic has left him with a somewhat ideosyncratic personal religious practise.

Hobbies & Pets

He enjoys cooking, and regularly uses his Sling Ring to travel in order to try new foods.

As an expert in the fusion of disparate magical traditions, he spends much of his time studying difficult forms of magic and crafting new spells. Inspired by the Book of Cagliostro, he is currently attempting to combine this interest with his love of cooking by fusing Esoteric Magic with the Kitchen Magic practised withing European Witchcraft traditions to craft food imbued with Esoteric Magic.

He enjoys both watching and participating in various fighting contests, following professional MMA, and being a regular participant at the Golden Daggers Club.

Author's Note
I don't love that Imei Chang gets fridged, but Wong was barely a character for most of comics, being treated as a prop to Doctor Strange with little or no internal life of his own, so I wasn't going to pass up one of the few events in comics that genuinely revolves around his character!
