Personal history

Malson's mother, Amalia, died when he was too young to remember her. He grew up hearing stories about her from others - that she was frail and kind, the perfectly courtly lady. He was told he resembled her, which made him happy - until it didn't.    Everyone seemed to think he was a girl, but even at a young age, he knew he was a boy. His father Ebener was a distant figure to him, but when Malson finally got fed up with being treated like a girl, that was who he went to. Bursting into the king's office and explaining - loudly - that he was a boy, Malson wasn't sure what would happen. He wasn't afraid - his father had never raised his voice or spoken a cross word, but he'd also never seemed to pay his son much attention.    So Malson was surprised and relieved when King Ebener simply accepted the truth and had Malson's lessons and wardrobe adjusted accordingly. Malson was happier when his father had the midday meal with him - just him and his dad, no one else. He loved talking with his father, but there was something else on his mind during these occasions.    He had a younger brother - the son of one of the gardeners, Braelin. But because Braelin had a different mom, he wasn't considered a prince - and his dad said that his brother's mom didn't want him to be. Considering all the lessons and etiquette, Malson didn't blame her. But he still found it weird, to have a brother but not really have a brother. Especially when it seemed like his dad worried about his younger brother, too.    So when Braelin's mom died, a thirteen-year-old Malson made his own decision - that he and Braelin would be brothers for real, not just by blood. He dragged Braelin along to his tutoring sessions and other lessons - even to his lunches with their dad. Ebener accepted this - and Braelin - as well. Malson thought his dad even seemed relieved about it. Malson and Braelin had an odd relationship - despite being the one to drag Braelin into pseudo-nobility, Malson often 'forbid' him from attending social events. This, however, was because Braelin didn't want to attend them but was too polite to refuse on his own. Braelin, on the other hand, would only get into fights with other kids when they insulted Malson - otherwise not seeming to even notice the ways they would disparage him.    Soon after, the elven princess Eweylona arrived. At first, Malson didn't like her very much - the magic frost that trailed her when she first arrived would have killed Braelin's plants, and he hated anything that upset his younger brother. But as he got to know the princess, he decided she was alright. And by the time she and his dad got married, he thought it was nice to have a mom he could remember. And he was equally excited for two more younger siblings when the twins were born.    Though after years of peace, when Malson and Ebener had been discussing plans for his coronation and how Malson wanted to go about courting in noble circles, Malson's uncle Ferrick usurped the throne.    Ferrick offered Malson a place in his new court - but only if Malson agreed to live as a woman. Malson could not accept this, and fled with the rest of his family. His current whereabouts are unknown.
