Personal history

Meir'ril and his twin sister, Ayelma, are the youngest of the former royal siblings of the Ealdwine family. They were born during a time of peace in the kingdom of Jost, and grew up in a loving family.   Meir'ril is more reserved than his sister - he enjoys reading, painting, and practicing magic taught to him by his mother Eweylona. As a result, he spent a good deal of time in the frost garden talking with his older brother Braelin, who worked as a gardener.   When Ferrick the Rude usurped the throne, he and Ayelma escaped with Braelin's uncle.

Meir'ril, Ayelma, and Owren escaped the Jostian capital of Fouran through a hidden passage under a well in the castle courtyard. They traded their finery for plain clothes and passage to the neighboring country of Gresma , and made their way to the coast. Finding passage, they went around the coast of the Middle Sea to Mariesa. After living there for a few years among other refugees fleeing the Jostian Civil War, Ferrick's men came looking for surviving royal family members.
Ayelma rolled her eyes, “So we managed to pay for a boat ride round the curve to Mariesa. Lived in a coastal town for about a year - more refugees joining us as the civil war started up. Left with them when the town kicked us out - though mostly because Ferrick’s men came sniffing about for us.”   “Not much to say past that,” Meir’ril sighed, “We traveled with the other refugees all the down the curve until we settled in Vede a few months ago.”   “The curve,” Jurao asked.   “Mm,” Braelin nodded, “The Human Realm is divided into two continents - the bigger one has an ocean in the middle of it like a ring. ‘Round the curve’ just means following around the coast of it, either by boat or foot.”   “Ah,” the Demon King nodded.   “Was… was that a question?” Ayelma snorted.   “Yes,” Jurao nodded, “I know most people have trouble telling when I mean to ask one.”   “It usually makes sense in context,” Braelin frowned.
-Demon King's Gardener, In Which a Family Catches Up
The coastal town they'd been living in, fearing the now Empire-backed Ferrick, forced the trio to leave. As the common people had been loyal to the old king, many chose to leave with them when they traveled to Vede and started building a new town with leave from the king there.    Several months after that, Right Hand Minaz found them on behalf of Demon King Jurao, and invited them back to the Demon Realm where their brother Braelin now worked as Royal Gardener.
