Personal history
Braelin was born to a castle gardener named Aesly as the illegitimate son of then-king Ebener. This was an open secret in the castle, and so he always knew who his father was despite the man not being in his life as a young child.
He loved plants, just like his mother - and she was happy to teach him everything she knew. He has happy memories of those times, though few - as his mother died when he was young. After that, his life underwent a significant change.
While he was officially being raised by his uncle Owren, his older brother Malson - the crown prince - had decided to take Braelin under his wing. He convinced him to go to lessons by pointing out that he would be able to learn more about plants if he could read, and brought Braelin to daily lunches with their father. He formed a good impression of his father from this time - they both had a more quiet nature, and so got along well. As long as he wasn't being forced to go to social events, Braelin really didn't mind the rest.
When princess Eweylona arrived, Braelin had only one thought in mind - to ask her about the frost elf plants he'd read about in books, and show her the little patch of snowrise flowers he'd been trying to grow. Eweylona was happy to share what she knew, and even cast magical snow to keep the ground cold enough for the flowers to thrive. After that, Braelin was more than happy when she and Ebener wed and he got a second mother. He even planted a small frost garden for her, feeling he was better able to connect to people through plants than anything else.
When the twins were born, he wasn't sure what to think - being the older sibling felt odd, and he wasn't sure if he should do what Malson did or try something else. In the end, he figured out how to play with Ayelma and Meir'ril on his own - not having the energy to copy his more enthusiastic older brother.
Due to his close relationship with his family, he was not spared when Ferrick the Rude usurped Ebener - he sent the twins off with his uncle, and went back to help Malson escape as well. Unfortunately, he was then separated from his brother as the fled their pursuers.
Braelin was on the run for five years before slipping through a rift into the Demon Realm on accident - specifically, into the gardens of the Demon King’s Castle. Desperately hungry but remembering that demonic plants had some level of sentience, he asked a nearby fruit bush for food - and was given it. In return, he brought the plant water. Noticing the garden's uncared-for state, Braelin decided to tend the gardens until he was recovered enough to leave.
He ended up staying for ten years before the Demon King Jurao discovered him, and rewarded his years of secret service with an official appointment as Royal Gardener.
