Lamprey

Lampreys are an ancient but reliable model of spelljammer originally built by spacefaring humans.

Weapons & Armament

Most Lampreys are equipped with multiple ballistas in addition to the grappling jaws located on the bow of the vessel. Unlike traditional rams, the grappling jaws of the Lamprey require a crew member to manually winch the "mouth" closed. This allows the Lamprey to grapple enemy vessels, while the design of the jaws prevents the Lamprey from getting stuck. This, combined with the front-facing ballistas, encourages Lamprey captains to take fighting into close quarters.
However, this design does come with drawbacks. Becauase the bow has to be hollow to allow for a crew member to work the winch, this also makes the jaws more fragile than traditional rams. Additionally, a lucky ballista shot by an enemy vessel can pierce through the mouth of ram, which can also threaten the spelljamming helm located right behind it. The open main deck also exposes the crew to more attacks than modern designs and any attempt at ramming risks throwing the unsecured crew on the main deck to the ground.
