Flitter
A Flitter is a small spelljamming vessel used by the Imperial Elven Navy (IEN) as a fast moving strike craft.
Propulsion
Flitters crafted from before the First Unhuman War required a spelljamming helm to fly or fuel powered by a combustible variety of starfly sap and had notably stiffer wings than modern variants, which prevented them from furling up for transport.
The improvements made to the Flitter over the course of the First Unhuman War eventually resulted in craft that could fly under their own power, thanks to advancements in making the Flitter's wings organic. Today, most Flitters use their own wings to fly short distances and are carried over larger distances by carrier vessels, like the IEN's Man-O-War or Armada.
Weapons & Armament
Due to their small size, Flitters do not often come equipped with attached weapons. Instead, most Flitters outfitted for battle carry two passengers: a pilot and a longbowman or mage that can attack from a distance.
During the First Unhuman War, some Flitters, called Firewinds, were turned into suicide crafts. They were loaded with flammables and piloted into enemy ships, where they exploded on impact. The pilots were usually given a means of escape before their attack, such as a potion of flying or a dimension door scroll. However, by the end of the war the IEN began using charmed enemy combatants as pilots for Firewinds. This practice was discontinued following the end of the First Unhuman War, though the IEN Admiralty did consider reviving the practice for the Second Unhuman War.
Armor and defense
Like all IEN crafts, Flitters are grown and continue growing over the course of their use. Because of their small size, Flitters require more constant maintenance and pruning to keep the vessel in working condition.
