Carlos Domínguez is the main character from Book 1, Dawn of the Superhero Age. Carlos lives with his grandmother Yolanda Rodríguez.

Personal history
What Carlos was told at five years old (the story above) is a lie told to protect young children. Carlos' mother Gracinda (Rodriguez) died shortly after childbirth, and his father, Enrique, died of cancer when Carlos was 5. Carlos moved in with his grandmother (abuela) Yolanda Domínguez upon his father's death and she became his legal guardian. The resulting unstable upbringing mentioned in the spoilers below led to challenging early-teenage years that introduced young Carlos to the police.

Gracinda and her brother Hector Rodriguez belonged to the upper eschelon of a local drug cartel. Realizing she was with child, Gracinda attempted to extricate herself from the cartel to protect Carlos. The cartel did not take kindly to what they viewed as betrayal and planned to murder her in the hospital while she rested and kidnap the child. Through sheer coincidence, Enrique—while sitting with his sleeping wife—startled the hired gun but couldn't stop him in time. A fight ensued and securitiy appreneded the murderer, leaving Enrique injured and Gracinda dead.
Fearing for his and Carlos' life, Enrique fled after discovering Hector had a hand in his sisters' death.
When Hector finally caught up with Enrique five years later, he arranged for and successfully murdered Enrique, but luckily Carlos was not at home—he was with Abuela. When she learned of Enrique's murder, she fled with Carlos and moved around the country many times, eventually settling in Portsmouth, NH.
Two years ago, Hector found them.
