Daughters of Verity Organization in The Ophelia VII 'Dust Zone | World Anvil

Daughters of Verity

The Daughters of Verity are an Ecclesiarchal Prelature Militant (often colloquially although erroneously called an "Order") of Adepta Sororitas who own and administer the Via Imperator in the 'Dust Zone of Ophelia VII. While their most-visible activities are military ones and all members of the Order are trained warriors, they regard themselves as primarily a religious organization and see their charism as social rather than military.

History

The Ecclesiarchal Prelature Militant

The Daughters of Verity are a unique organization in the Adeptus Ministorum and indeed the Imperium. Although consisting of Adepta Sororitas and being stationed on Ophelia VII, they are not part of the Convent Sanctorum and do not answer to the Abbess. Because of their history, they answer directly to the Ecclesiarch and bear the unique title Ecclesiarchal Prelature Militant.   Because of this status, they cannot as easily draw on the resources of the Convent for specialists such as Sisters Hospitalier, and so the Order is more diverse than the Orders Militant and includes medics, educators, mechanics and engineers, social workers and others.

Charism, Formation and Recruitment

The recruitment practices of the Daughters are intimately connected with their charism of serving the neglected workers of the 'Dust Zone, and are better described as formation. They see themselves primarily as a monastic religious order - a group willingly practicing a particular expression of the Imperial Creed communally and intensely - rather than a military force. Being drawn to the unique theological emphases, liturgical practices, customs, traditions and charitable practices - or "charism" - of the Daughters of Verity is the reason a candidate discerns membership. Candidates do not come from the schola - they come exclusively from the daughters of the 'Dust Zone workers, initially entering postulancy after being a student in one of the 'Dust Zone schools and eventually making formal vows and becoming a professed Sister.

Uniform

Main article: Habits, Battleplate, Arms and Honors   The Daughters of Verity wear habits of a similar design to those of other Sisters and utilize the same pattern of Sororitas battleplate. The armor is worn during deployment, training, guard duty and certain ceremonial events (when the military character of the Order is emphasized) and the habit is worn at all times (when worn over battleplate, the habit is left unbuttoned and forms loose sleeves and a scapular-like skirt. When worn on its own, the habit is buttoned to form an all-enclosing robe).   Because the Daughters are both a military force and a religious community, they utilize these two garments - battleplate and habit - to express these two different but complementary roles. The possession of a habit denotes a woman is a Sister (having made at least the simple vows of a novice) while its color (undyed or dyed blue) denotes whether or not she has made her formal profession of faith. The habit remains with the Sister from the start of her novitiate to death and even beyond (she is buried in her habit) while her battleplate and weapons returned to the Order to be used by a new recruit. In this manner, the Daughters of Verity express their theological understanding that service to the Emperor endures forever, but the military expression of that service ends at death (although it is believed a dutiful Daughter goes to fight alongside the Emperor against His enemies after death, this combat is not physical but rather spiritual and - if fought with weapons at all - the arms and armor will be supplied by Him in the afterlife).
