The Fortress Walls

The fortress walls of the Crystal Citadel separate the Daughters of Verity's cloister-fortress from the surrounding 'Dust Zone. They are a simple, repeating design of injection-poured rockcrete over a framework of rebar. The walls consist of towers with sections of curtain walls running between them; each section of curtain wall has a flying buttress topped with a statue of an Imperial saint or hero. Battlements run along the walls, and shield projectors and weapon emplacements are mounted on the outside. The walls are penetrated by a single large egress, the Pilgrims' Gate, and a number of smaller postern gates.   The walls are simple in design and unaesthetically pleasing, being assembled in haste and with little attention to detail or decoration. The raw rockcrete is sturdy but largely unadorned - on the inside of the walls some devotional murals or reliefs have been commissioned by the Daughters of Verity, but no formal efforts have been made on the outside. Nevertheless, informal graffiti - most of it pious devotional art or petitions - has been made by the workers of the 'Dust Zone.   One devotional element on the interior walls is a shrine to the heroes of the Pacification of Ophelia; statues of the God-Emperor, a representation of a Custodian, and heroes of the Imperial Fists (including Rogal Dorn) are arranged around one of the flying buttresses. This shrine contains fragments of an ancient pre-Unity Terran prayer which speaks about "guardians of the ramparts" and the loss of a cloak. It is on the shrine that the cloaks of the Daughters of Verity Palatines are hung when they die, honoring both their sacrifice and the ceaseless vigil of the Imperial Fists.
