The Inclusions Military Formation in The Ophelia VII 'Dust Zone | World Anvil

The Inclusions

It is an article of faith among the Daughters of Verity that each member of the Order is chosen personally by Verity the Six-Winged Seraph. Certainly, the The Wings of Verity and Metatrix are directly selected by her, but no girl passes from Postulant to Novice or is permitted to profess solemn vows without Verity's approval.   However, contact with the ancient, psychically-powerful and inhuman intelligence that is the Crystal Lady can be too-much for a merely human mind to withstand unscathed. It is seen in the otherworldly detachment of the Feathers, but there are others - outside of the Order itself - who have been touched more deeply and terribly. They are known by many names - the Touched, Flawed Gems, the Broken - but when the Daughters speak reverently of them with a warding aquila against the same fate befalling them, they call them the Inclusions.   Verity reaches out to many in the 'Dust Zone; to Daughters she thinks will make good Feathers in her Wings, to those she wishes to gift with visions or locutions, to those whose assistance - conscious or not - she needs to achieve her unfathomable goals. Some of them cannot stand the contact with the xenos intelligence that is the Crystal Lady and their minds fracture with the strain. Sometimes, the alien programming that is Verity's consciousness resonates with a worker's mind and the harmonics shake her sanity loose. Whatever the cause, there are those in the 'Dust Zone whom Verity has "touched".   It is not common, but it is common enough the phrase has entered the lexicon of the toiling laborers; "he's touched" they will say of someone who is mentally defective or emotionally unstable or even just a little too eccentric. They don't mean it literally - such unfortunates owe their mental wounds to trauma or the pressures of life, not contact with the Crystal Lady - and none of them are as affected as the genuine Touched themselves. If they were, they would be euthanized out of mercy.   No such mercy is wasted on the Inclusions - their insanity is too valuable. They are corralled by the Daughters into asylums they euphemistically call sanitoriums - prisons by any other name. There they are imprisoned and shackled, straight-jacketed to protect others as much as themselves when not thrown into combat. Devoted with the fervor of madness and utterly heedless of danger, when the time for violence comes they hurl themselves forward against any foe the Daughters designate.   Lashed forward and directed by professed Sisters armed with neural whips - for only the most extreme of pain impinges itself on the Inclusions' fractured minds - the frothing madwomen fall on their foes with two-handed eviscerator chainswords, dealing dreadful damage but taking horrific casualties in return. Seeing the Inclusions as broken tools in the hands of Verity, beyond salvation, the Daughters do not care and - of course - the Inclusions are too-far-gone to even recognize they or their lives are in danger.

The Inclusions are my attempt to make use of Repentia models (and introduce something grimdark to the Daughters of Verity) despite the fact I (personally) do not like the idea of the Repentia as specifically "shamed" Sisters and feel they do not work with the background of the Sisters or the Daughters of Verity. My Repentia are different to the standard ones.
