Naydan river

The Naydan River spings from the eastern slopes of the Fire Mountains, turning south and following the mountain line southwards, until it crosses the mountain range in an extraordinay canyon, the Naydan Canyon, and passes out on its southern side, emptying from here into the sea. With a length of about two thousand miles it is among the longest of the Land.

Geography

The seemingly unnatural path the river takes - flowing parallel to a mountain range - is caused by an almost hundret mile wide valley, forcing the water into its course. Othewise however, the river would flow directly into the Great Desert.
There have been multiple research papers on the question whether that would turn the desert itself into a green and fertile land or cause the river torun dry after a distance in the sand. Both cases have been argued for but none have been proved to a satisfactoy point yet.

Note: The full research papers can be read up on in the relating section of The Great Library

As it is, the river follows its course, bringing water to the fertile gound and making it a region highly populated by men and animals alike. Also a great diverstity of plats can be found here.
Naming:
The Naydan River is said to be named after mystical water spirits that live in its springs, the Naids. On rare occasions the Naids are believed to come further down the river and make merry with the peoples living along the shores of the river.
