Hall of Legends Building / Landmark in The End of the World | World Anvil

Hall of Legends

The pinnacle of the Worldbuilders' Guild Hall, the Hall of Legends occupies the top floor and provides a place for the Legendary Worldsmiths to perform and perfect their craft without interference from those of lower rank.

Purpose / Function

The Hall was built to provide a working space for the Legends to work and discuss the important issues of the day.

Design

The room has a large central chamber with floor-to-ceiling windows at each end, looking out over the vast expanse of the realm. Large skylights line the ceiling, both to provide light and to allow the Golden Forge to peer down upon the glorious work of the Legends.   Each of the Legends has a suite of rooms which are arranged along the long walls. These include separate workshops and private quarters for sleeping, donning their glorious garb, and entertaining each other (as no other guests are permitted in the Hall of Legends).

Entries

The only entry to the room is a grand staircase that descends down to the Inner Sanctum Council Chambers. This staircase rises up through the floor and is surrounded by a railing that originally was located in the Temple to the Sun God on the planet Sajaanal, having been salvaged only moments before the temple and the rest of the planet was vaporized when the star went nova. A slight softening of the details show precisely how close to the last possible instant the recovery took place and, indirectly, how wrong the Sajaanaleans were with their sacrifices aimed at appeasing the Sun God.

Look mate, I bloody well warned you that there is a reason the whole bleeding ocean is blue. That seaweed makes a wicked great dye, but just don't get it wet. That's what I told you. And yes, your bloody arse is damp, you pompous twit.— Bertie Fells, Fells Upholstery and Curtains
The tables and chairs are carved from exotic woods, each unique and yet all in perfect harmony. The upholstery is woven from the finest silk, dyed with the truest and most spectacular colors. In practice, this means that the chairs are hideously uncomfortable and upon arising from one it is almost inevitable that those splendid colors will have stained the garments they touched. In the tradition of these things, those dyes that come away so easily from the upholstery will bind themselves forever to whatever fabrics they come into contact with.
The floors are strewn with rugs made from exotic animal skins. In order not to offend those who might otherwise find this practice anathema, the animals whose skins are present all died peaceful, natural deaths. To ensure that this is the case, apprentices can be found on many worlds, trailing animals with notably perfect pelts, waiting for them to expire. Tragically, because most of the skins belong to carnivorous species, this results in a steady need to replace apprentices, but at least no meaningful lives were lost in the acquisition of the floor coverings.

Alterations

The original gold-leafed toilet was replaced by a solid gold unit after some of the users complained that the leaf would adhere to their nether regions. Apparently, on some worlds gilding your buttocks is frowned upon and the victims found themselves to be the subject of ridicule.   Ironically, the original solid gold hinges and locks had to be replaced by gold-plated brass after it was discovered that the massive doors were causing the soft gold to deform, trapping several legends within their quarters until maintenance crews could be summoned to pry the doors open. The original door hardware was remelted down and recast into the aforementioned toilet.

Architecture

Words are somehow inadequate to describe the splendor of the Hall of Legends. One might start with the walls, which are not merely ivory-colored, but are actually made from ivory harvested from the corpse of an ætherwhale that had crashed on the Wirra 6 several millennia ago. This material is tastefully accented with gold and platinum crown moldings, chair rails, and framed panels.   During the day the room is well-lit by the sun, but at night gold chandeliers burning candles of snow-bee wax provide a soft, even light.   The quarters of each Legend can be easily identified by the massive life-sized portrait hanging next to the door of each room. These have been done by some of the greatest artists of a half-dozen worlds and portray the subjects as they perform the daily tasks of slaying dragons, being served by squadrons of cherubs, or forming new worlds out of nebulae.
