Guild Hall

There is always a bit of confusion because both the building and the main hall are commonly called the "guild hall". As a point of fact, the building itself is actually named the Worldbuilders' Guild Hall. The main room on the ground floor is known as the guild hall.or just the hall.   The interior of the hall is open to all guild members from Journeymen to the Legendary. Apprentices have access to the hall as well.   At any time there may be many conversations or a single speaker. The guild hall is considered an outstanding place to gather news and share gossip.

Purpose / Function

The hall was originally built as a meeting chamber, but with time and a growing number of members staying late into the night, some arrangements have been made for overnight accommodations. These are, to be kind, of a somewhat spartan nature, so those who can afford it usually prefer to stay at the Worlds' End Inn.

Alterations

The hall is constantly in the middle of one construction project or another. Expansion efforts are the most disruptive, as the larger influx of guild members seems to coincide with the hottest and coldest seasons, so when a wall is torn down to make more room, the temperature of the hall can get somewhat uncomfortable.
The addition of sleeping facilities has meant the erection of barracks-style bunks within the aisle along one wall of the hall. These are reserved for the masters of the guild. Some of the masters have more or less permanently staked out bunks, while most flop into whichever is closest or cleanest. Journeymen are allowed to sleep on the workbenches and bedrolls can be stored in racks. Those who go to bed early have to put up with the clamor of the hall, but at least have the advantage of being able to find relatively uncluttered workbenches. Apprentices are free to sleep on the floor.
It's not that I want to spend my nights here, but after you've been in the workshop all day and then you take a little time off to chat with some friends in Smith's, it can get a bit late to try to get back to your own world. Wandering over to the Guild Hall and sacking out on a bed here lets you get a good start on the next morning's work.— Bruno Verabalis
This later arrangement has had the unexpected benefit of ridding the hall of rodents, as apparently even the common rat has standards for its living companions.

Architecture

While the exterior of the building can be a little off-putting, the interior of the Guild Hall itself is very impressive. The design is very much along the lines of a classic basilica, with a long and tall central hall flanked by aisles on either side. The aisles were originally intended to function as an arcade, with workshops where small groups of guild members could work together. As noted above, this area has been co-opted for sleeping facilities and the workbenches have been moved into the central hall.   The central hall is roughly thirty feet high and is well lit for much of the length by windows in the walls above the aisles. The newer construction is darker, as no openings were left for the windows. A project to rectify this is underway.
