Hermes General Building / Landmark in The Elysium Archipelago | World Anvil

Hermes General

A multi structured hospital set on the south side of Apollo City that sprawls out for three city blocks. Complete with every medical tool required for healing, surgical assistance and medical breakthroughs, the only thing required is a mind knowledgeable enough to make the place a functioning utopia for the ill and downtrodden. It glows a deep shade of green at night as a beacon for those who require healing. There is magical warding and physical monitoring/protections in place to ensure the hospital is more or less safe. It is currently run by Dr. Shiori Amakusa and Miss Sapphee.

Purpose / Function

to help, heal and rehabilitate those who require medical assistance in Apollo City.

Architecture

Besides the strange green glow that comes from the building, it looks similar to almost every other major metropolitan hospital. However, there are small nods to ancient Greek architecture in its columns on the interior as well as a sense of calmness that comes from all the staff who work there.

History

In the beginning, it was simply an ordinary hospital that reflected one of the major medical centers in Seattle. However, due to the rampant crime that mostly came from the Aphrodite Hotel and the Coliseum of Ares, Hermes' influence soon came over the hospital as a way to regulate the amount of people getting injured in the city. All medical practitioners who started working in the hospital shared their stories of being "possessed" by swift hands and innovative surgical techniques to saved even the most terminal of patients, believing that their respective gods worked through them. Those who carried no belief in the supernatural credited such amazing momentary skill to their own incredible prowess. The hospital gained popularity for its life-saving procedures and its ability to save every life that walks through the doors. However, this humble beginning soon turned macabre.   After a year of healing patients and bandaging wounds, the inventive spirit of Hermes began to overwhelm the natural sense of empathy that the practitioners promised to hold. Surgeries turned into live experiments to test different parts of the body, risky procedures became the norm and some of the doctors became unfeeling ghouls who wished to progress medical phenomena rather than simply save a life. After a scandal in which an obese patient was used as a guinea pig to see how much tissue could be removed from their body before they flatlined, ultimately killing the patient, several doctors were terminated. The scandal reached the edges of Apollo City and the hospital came under investigation by the Apollo Police Department. Upon resumption of services, people were split as to whether their doctor would save their lives or have them inadvertently donate their bodies to medical science.
