The Loreweavers

Professional Storytellers

Storytelling is incredibly important to the Elves. Their society is built upon the ancestral knowledge passed through the generations by their Loreweavers. Every tale they weave is designed to either educate their peers about life's dangers or teach them moral lessons. Loreweavers must learn a wide variety of stories to fit any occasion.   To start their journey on the right path, there are ten often-repeated Foundational Tales that children learn through repetition. There are beloved holiday and festival stories only told once per year. A Loreweaver dedicates their life to collecting as many stories as possible. Great oratory skills and the ability to create immersion for the listener set the best Loreweavers apart.

Wandering Ways

The best way to collect new stories is to go out and find them! While Lorewavers spend a great deal of time traveling among their people and visiting their clan's seasonal settlements, they do take time to travel and meet other clans. When two or more Loreweavers gather together, they swap stories, brag about their clan, and share gossip. Once per summer, the Elves committed to the storytelling profession meet for The Loreweavers Festival, a large three-day event filled with food, stories, and warm fires.

Welcomed Guests

Every clan welcomes a visiting Loreweaver with welcome arms and open hearts. Fire Spirits often trail a talented Loreweaver. The enthusiastic elementals use light and sound effects to enhance their favorite stories out of appreciation for the Loreweaver's gentle handling. Loreweavers do not capture Fire Spirits, instead welcoming them into a prepared firepit filled with quality fuel to keep the Fire Spirits' constant hunger at bay.

Heartsong Ghostwriters

When an elf wishes to express their romantic feelings to another elf, a Loreweaver will happily offer their assistance. Heartsongs are a special genre of music that focuses on courting a potential Soul Mate. Writing a Heartsong is an arduous and time-consuming task as the song must be individually crafted for the specific couple.   The Elves believe their souls as a community are all linked together but that a pair of elves can choose to become soul mates. When the souls' lights and hearts' songs are brought into harmony, the two elves will be able to find each other again in the next iteration of The Dream. It is a bond meant to transcend space and time.

Thanks, Chris! I think world builders are pretty partial to storytellers because we identify with them ourselves. :)

Ah, yes, the wandering storyteller! I love how these people are so integrated into elvish culture and not just meandering chroniclers. I also love their relationships with fire spirits. Lovely article!

May your worldbuilding hammer always fall true! Also, check out the world of the Skydwellers for lots of aerial adventures.

Thanks, Reanna! I wanted the Loreweavers to be influential because Elvish culture predates the arrival of The Dreamstone Codex and written language. The Fire Spirits are much happier to be hanging out with the Elves instead of the Dwarves who put them into Contraptions.

I love when people highlight how important storytellers are to the world, and this article is both beautifully written and beautiful conceptually. I get so much feel for the elves and their culture in a few short paragraphs. And I love all the of the details behind the heartsong.

Thanks, Molly! I believe good storytelling makes the world a better place. Many of the Elves are such nice people. The Heartsongs are my inner hopeless romantic shining through. <3
