Daradal

Close to the mysterious Feylin Forest and the Dossor Hills is the region of Daradal, famous for its healers, but also secluded and independent. The lands between the hills is a murky wetland. The air is often heavy and pressing. Various rivers and small streams flow through the area, the Harrin Run and Thring River being the most important. Due to its location between the forest and the hills, Daradal has always been an independent and secluded area. It was only after the lands were conquered by Looras the Great that people began to settle here in larger numbers. Most of the region is still sparsely populated and large areas are unsettled. Wild life and terrible monsters await those how stray off the beaten path. In this land the conflict between Light and Darkness can most clearly be observed. Healers from the Church or Annaaru, Lady of Light and cults of Morlorrim are in a constant struggle, working to win the common folk for their cause.

Government

The two most influential figures in Daradal are Duke Arling of Thring and Father White of the Temple of Annaaru. There is an uncomfortable rivalry between the two. Since the founding of the city the High Priest of Annaaru was seen as the city’s leader. When the Duke of Darnallan made Thring the capital of the duchy he assumed that the people would turn to him as the new leader of the city. However, their faith was strong and the high Priest remained in control. This conflict has lasted several generations and the city is now divided. Half of the people recognize the duke as their ruler, while the others still believe that the High Priest is the rightful leader of the city and its community.

Settlements

The region of Daradal is a sparsely populated one and there are but a few villages scattered throughout. In the south is the city of Thring, the religious centre of Rasfadal, famous for its temple of Annaaru. The rest of the land is populated by small communities of hunters and farmsteads.

Dinnar

Furthest south of the region is the village of Dinnar. It is half a day away from the city of Thring. Located on the banks of the river Thring its population mostly consists of fishers and farmers. As the river flows south from Thring it brings with it its blessed water.

Ipsam

Located in the center of the Kingdom of Rasfadal lies the Village of Ipsam. Ipsam is build near the ruins of Old Ipsam, which burned down in a terrible fire, a century ago. The only thing that survived the inferno was the Church of Theala, and it still stands where it always has.  The people of Ipsam live a quiet life on the Fendalian countryside. Most people work on the fields or go to the nearby forests and hills to hunt. Or... well, there's the church. During the great fire the old village burned down completely but the church survived. The people feared the Goddess didn't think their dedication was adequate and had the village go up in flames as punishment for their sins. It is said that the people of Ipsam grew arrogant. See, Theala is the Goddess of Luck and the people of Ipsam had it so good, they didn't think they needed Her anymore. The stopped holding feasts in Her name. The farmers stopped thanking Her after exceptional harvests, hunters stopped thanking Her as they barely escaped from from the forests with their lives. The people grew unthankful. That all changed after the fire; they are scared of what might happen when they forget to thank Her again.

Murkhil

Nestled in the northern reaches of te Dossor Hills is the village of Murkhil near the border of the Daradal region. It’s is not much more than a grim grouping of houses sat on top of a handful of hills. Hard soil makes the village’s surroundings unfit for farming, and so hunters supply most of the food. Beyond Murkhil is a long road that leads into the Murr Shore, a dangerous region. As such, Murkhil is often a final stop to gather supplies for adventurers and the people of the village cater to this market very well.

Thring

At the confluence of the rivers Darlac and Thring lies the city of Thring. What started as a humble gathering of houses around a holy site quickly grew into one of the largest cities in the kingdom. Now it is famous for its healers and contains the largest temple in the kingdom. Almost five centuries ago Fredric Lightbringer started construction on the Temple of Annaaru. Two decades later the monument would be finished and it quickly became known as a place of healing. Many people travelled to visit this new place and settled nearby. Fredric, and later the High Priest of Annaaru, assumed the role of caretaker over the people that lived near the temple. It did not take long for the High Priest to become a powerful in the region. When the small settlement started attracting more people and grew in size, the Duke of Darnallan moved its capital to the new town. A small church on the island in the centre of the city was expanded and repurposed as the Ducal Palace, though the people of Thring had mixed feelings about this.  Ever since Darnallan took ownership over the city the dukes have struggled to gain any true influence over the city. In truth, most of the power still lies with the High Priest. This is painstakingly obvious by even looking at the city: the Ducal Palace sits on a small island while the Temple of Annaaru looms over it, high up on the cliffs.

Factions

The Church of Annaaru

Fredryc Lightbringer was a Fendalian knight that one day fell in the Battle of Daradal, where he was thrown off the cliffs and taken by the river Thring to his presumed death. In truth he survived the fall, and in the river received visions from the Goddess of Light, Annaaru. When he regained consciousness on the banks of the river he returned to the place were disaster struck him and built the Temple of Annaaru. The temple of Annaaru became the largest in the land and quickly attracted devout followers of the Goddess.

The Cult of Morlorrim

Deep in the Dossor Swamp is an old village. It is rumored that long ago a great city stood where you'll find the Dossor Swamp today. Its people worshipped Morlorrim, the Lord of Shadows. Over time the city fell to ruin. Only the Church of Morlorrim and the nearby graveyard remain. Some decades ago a group of fishermen settled in the swamps. To their surprise they found a church and graveyard. While both had obviously been abandoned for many years, they were otherwise in decent shape. Almost as if someone still looked after it. Some belief that the region is home to a cult of Morlorrim. A group of people praying for his return.

The Order of the Sun

The Order of the Sun is most active in Daradal, though they have strongholds throughout all of Rasfadal. They are a knightly order sworn to eradicate the followers of Morlorrim and other Dark Gods. While their actions may appear to be in the service of Annaaru, most priests consider them a problematic group of fanatics. Should they ever achieve their goals, the Great Balance might be broken and the result would be disastrous.

Notable People

Duke Arling of Daradal

Duke Arling is an old man and childhood friend of King Staar II. Arling is the ruler of the Duchy of Daradal and its capital, the city of Thring. The true extend of his power, however, is debated. Most of the people of Thring consider Father Dewytt to be their leader and see the duke as little more than an intruder. Arling has made many attempts to get the people to recognize his position, but without much success so far.

Father Dewytt

Father Dewytt is the high priest of the Goddess Annaaru, Lady of Life and Light and enjoys a position of power within the Temple of Annaaru and the city of Thring. While Dewytt is by no means an intimidating man, but his mere presence asserts respect and dedication. He needs only a few words to rouse up any crowd and the people of Thring would not hesitate to do his bidding.

Cult Leader Aemryg

The cult of Morlorrim is led by a questionable figure that goes by the name of Aemryg. He first found Morlorrim through a fear of death when he got sick. He begged to the God, pleading for a longer life. Morlorrim saw potential is the man and offered to withhold his death, so long as he served the God. Followers of Morlorrim have always lurked around the Temple of Annaaru to thwart the Goddess plans, but they were never organised. Aemryg aims to not simply cause unrest among the followers of Annaaru, but to solidify Morlorrim’s place in Daradal and rid the land of the influence of the Goddess.

Geography

Daradal is a diverse of hills, swamps and cultivated fields. It knows comfortable summers with temperatures between 15˚ and 20˚ and dry winters with a temperature between 0˚ and 10˚. In the centre of Daradal lies the dossor swamp, a soggy land surrounded by the Dossor Hills. Daradal is sparsely populated and these swamps sparsest of all. Safe for a few small communities of fishermen and hunters the only creatures you’ll find here will try to eat you. Small patches of woodland grow here and are populated by maple and birch trees. In the north are a barren land of gentle hills and scattered trees. The land is populated by hunters and masons. East of the Dossor Hills is the city of Thring, the spiritual centre of Rasfadal. It is surrounded by rocky hills and woodland with grazing fields and farms sparsely scattered around. The river Thring, the namesake of the city, flows down from the north and is the believed be blessed as it exits the city. The lands west of the Dossor hills are flat lands of farms of fields, relatively safe and quiet.

Darlac River

The Darlac river is a tributary to the Thring river and flows from the Dossor Swamp. Its waters are murky and dark until they reach the city of Thring where the Darlac river joins the Thring river and its water is purified by Annaaru’s grace.

Dossor Hills

In the middle of Daradal is a range of hills called the Dossor Hills stretching almost 200km from north to south. The soil is hard and barren with very little plant growth. The hills are haunted by evil spirits and servants of Morlorrim.

Dossor Swamp

The Dossor swamp is a mostly deserted land. Even wildlife is mostly absent, safe for a few brave wolves and birds of prey. Instead it is populated by evil creatures born of the shadows and dark gods.

Harrin Run

The western border of Daradal is marked by the Harrin Run, a calm river that offers plenty of fish. Its banks are decorated by oaks and maple trees and willows. Most of the year the river can only be crossed safely at Ferral, but when the water level drops there are a handful of fords where one can cross in relative safety.

Thring River

The Thring river originates from the Dossor Hills in northern Daradal. From there is flows south along the Feylin Forest until it reaches the city of Thring. There its waters are blessed by Annaaru’s Grace and continue to flow south. Along the river, all the way until it reached the Endless Sea at Hofendal people drink the water and bathe in it, hoping to enjoy Annaaru’s Grace themselves.
