Last World Geographic Location in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

Last World

The Last World is the nexus of the Dark Tapestry, a desolate landscape that surrounds the Basin Below. It is the most prominent manifestation of Vacuus in the known universe, and is thus rarely visited by mortals. The works of Albus Rickette are one of few texts that even mention the plane of existence, outside the mad scribbles of the Cult of the Elder Mythos.

Geography

The Last World is described as a broken land of juxtaposed environments, as pockets of existence from the realms above come crashing below, slowly rotting into the muck of the Basin. Because of this phenomenon, any past account of the Last World is out-of-date, as the lands that explorer saw are likely gone, warped by Wither, or replaced by a new existence entirely.   On a cosmic scale, the Last World is separated from most worlds by the Outer Gates, and is usually manned by the denizens closest to that structure, such as the Fey of the First World in Tyrnog. While it has never been confirmed that the Last World touches all other existences in the cosmos, the belief is held by most scholars.

History

After Albus Rickette satisfied his curiousity in the First World, it is said that he began to think of endings and apocalypses, and took steps among the Fey realms with that mindset. Over several years, he found himself moving closer and closer, each realm darker than the one before, until he ultimately arrived in the Last World. He described vague horrors there -- so profound that they turned his hair permanently white -- but notably include the civilizations of the Dark Fey, and their experiments with Wither from the Basin Below.   Mercenary folklore claims that Caesura once ventured to the Last World, but this is by far and large considered an exaggeration to boost the reputation of the Chessboard Conclave.
