Chessboard Conclave

The Chessboard Conclave is an elite mercenary group owned by Chess, and managed by his partner Alexis Night. It is without question the most prolific non-government military organization in the galaxy, and is known far and wide for never having failed a mission's primary objective. They are frequently contracted by the Stewards to solve one-off problems in the Pact Worlds, so much so that Director-General Lin Camulan has gone on record to say that they have their own section in the government's yearly budget.

Structure

The ground forces of the Chessboard Conclave are primarily made up of advanced automatons known as Pawns, initially created by Chess but later handed off to their senior engineer, Fidget. These handle most of the "grunt work" given to the Conclave, including escort duties, guard work, and complicated deliveries. More serious work — espionage, assassinations, kidnappings — is handled directly by the senior officers, who are given codenames that match the non-pawn pieces on a chessboard. They are as follows:

All members of the Conclave answer to Alexis Night, who in turn answers directly to Chess. Outside of Pawns answering to the senior officers on mission, there is no other official hierarchy.

History

Although considered by intelligence officers to have existed beforehand, the Chessboard Conclave was officially registered as a mercenary group in the Pact Worlds starting 280 AG. They earned an early claim to fame in the last decade of the Silent War, taking out Veskarium outposts and starships that threatened the borders of the Pact Worlds. In 291 AG, after the arrival of the Swarm and the ceasefire that ended the Silent War, the Conclave began to ship out the first iterations of the Pawns. They earned galactic acclaim for their effectiveness against Swarm colonies, gaining respect from even the Vesk soldiers who had once been their enemies, and solidified themselves onto the world stage ever since.
In 317 AG, the Conclave was one of the first organizations to get access to G.O.L.A.R.I.O.N., entering the game a few weeks after the Centurion's Riddle spread across the stars.
