Bast

Baxter Logan (a.k.a. Bast)

This information is exclusive to those who have crossed the Infinite Line. Speaking of the knowledge herein will trigger interference from the Monad, or his Other Side equivalent. Proceed with caution.
Baxter Logan, also known as Bast, is the focal hero of the Codex of Whispers, the half-and-half son of the People of the Maelstrom and Draemyre, chosen to wield Azkhrumdar against the Beasts of Armageddon. As the first child known to survive cross-breeding between the two cultures, Bast is bound to the elemental spirits of wind and shadow, but is also capable of using the Technomancy constructs created by Draemyre. His patron spirit is Crow, although their relationship became complicated after its corruption by the energies of the Dark Tapestry. He is one half of the Godhead of the Infinity Petal, indirectly ruling over all of Tyrnog.

Personal history

Baxter Logan was born fifteen years prior to the creation of the Infinity Petal, considered so weak at his birth that he would not survive the winter. The shaman declared him dead that night, refusing to hold a patron ceremony, which prompted a violent dispute between them and Riley that divided the entire town. Riley succeeded in overpowering the village elders and performed the ceremony herself, but all were horrified when Crow selected the poor boy, and the baby survived until the dawn. Riley was exiled as a result, but Baxter was anointed as one of the People as per tradition (earning his "true name" — Bast), and his mother was given a home in the village.   As neither the Codex author or Riley were around Bast during his childhood, information is extremely sparse. However, it is known that he was given the elements of wind and shadow in alignment with his patron, and that he grew up with Sara No-Name, Foly, and Chang Lu.   In his early teens, as Crow's power began to overwhelm Bast and none were capable of teaching him, Riley was invited back into the village to serve as his mentor, where she taught him to fly and about the mystic arts. However, this training was interrupted by the arrival of the Beasts of Armageddon and the ceasefire with Draemyre, leading to the selection process that saw Bast as the hero of both nations, and his heroics as described in the Codex.   In a conversation with Riley (just before the talk captured in Who's Who in Whoville?), she explained that Sara eventually grew jealous of Bast and attempted to kill him, and was supported by many of Bast's allies at the time (see S10E3: "Riley"). This betrayal led to the events seen in All Is Lost, where Bast became fully possessed by Crow and lost sight of his original goal. In the epilogue of that vision (granted by the Seer), it was revealed that Rufus Geldenleaf and Maximus Erebus are Splinters of his mind.   As of the Scoured Stars conflict Bast had regained some consciousness (see Amalgam) and could reason about current events, but did not act in his full capacity as a partial Godhead until rejoining with Maximus Erebus (just after he was seen in S10E1: "As Sheep That Have No Shepherd").
