Wooden pipe's wood

While the People of the Surface don't ever need to be worried about being cold, with the constant scorching sunlight raining from above The Pit, they still need to use fire for various things, such as cooking, smelting and heating things. With almost no vegetation growing on The Surface layers and small amount of Elements that manifest here, this might seem impossible.
While they show up in the smaller amounts, the Elements still influence the world. The most desired places are where the Nature and Water Elements show up at higher concentrations. When they do, they create oases with the flora similar to that growing on the lower layers. But the truly interesting show up in the places where only Nature Element is at higher levels than normal. In those cases, the wooden pipe "forests" are created.

Wooden pipe forests

The wooden pipes are similar in their structure to the dried up bamboo, however, compared to bamboo, they can branch out and coil creating a giant tangly mess. In some cases the structure is so big, it creates labyrinths.

Properties of the wood

The wood of the wooden pipes is flammable. It doesn't produce too much light, however, it produces a lot of the heat. By cutting it open or creating holes in it, one can control the heat and the speed at which it will burn.   It is slightly spongy in touch, however it doesn't seem to hold the big amounts of liquids.
While being hollow, unless cut, the wooden pipe's wood is pretty hard and good for creating structures, even such as houses. At least if one doesn't mind the small diameter of the pipes themselves.

Pipe fires

Some tribes discovered that if you seal one of the ends of the wooden pipe, drill a hole near it and create a fuse, the speed at which the pipe will start to burn will create the burst of flame coming out of the open side. This has been used both as a portable and light flamethrowers against some of the smaller Beasts, as well as very basic firearms for those who want a one-use item and those who couldn't maintain the weapon in the corrosive light of the sun.

They can even make flamethrowers! Really great idea for a fuel source and how it is used.
