The Stolen Sun Myth in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

The Stolen Sun

"What do you mean there is no sun?"
"Well, you've seen it? It's not there."
"Then what is shining up there?"
One of the biggest mysteries of The Surface and a conspiracy theory related to it the one of a supposedly missing sun. Because while the layers of The Surface are always basked in the light coming from above (as opposed to the lower layers which are lit by the shine of The Tree), no one really knows what is the source of said light. Whenever there is a clearance in the sand clouds which almost permanently cover the world above The Pit there are only stars and the dark sky. So where does the deadly light come from?

The missing sun. The Black Sun

The members of The Cult of the Black Sun (and because of their growth, many more) believe that the sun was stolen by someone or something. Its shine stayed in the same place while it itself is gone. According to the cult, it is The Tree's fault. The false idol (The Tree) and its zealous servants (The Guardians of The Tree) hid the sun and trapped everyone inside The Pit. They spread the theory that no one will ever be able to leave The Pit as long as the sun isn't brought back to its rightful place.

How real it is?

As of yet, no one knows if the sun ever existed at all. The so-called sunlight of The Surface doesn't seem to have any source but there are weirder things in here than the light without a source. Additionally, no ancient texts speaking about the existence of the sun have been found as of yet. Still, more and more people want to believe that there is some way to leave The Pit.
"The real question is if there never was any sun then what does the Cult of the Black Sun trying to summon?"
