Jackal Profession in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Jackal

A Jackal is a commonly used name for those who decide to earn a living by killing and robbing those who just left the transit cities between The Surface and The Tree layers of The Pit. These bandits often work in the networks consisting of scouts, traders, and fencers.   The system is simple. The scouts look out for potential "prey" and contact traders. The traders sell the gear marked with Jackal marks to the prey that will leave the city soon. Then the real job starts. The Jackals, after noticing the right marks on the travelers, set up an ambush. They want to do quickly, with the only casualties being on the other side. Even if they manage to capture someone alive, they usually kill them soon after. Doing otherwise could tear down the whole operation, as their prey could find out who they are by the trader who sold them the marked stuff. After the successful hunt, the Jackals sell what they can to their fencers and keep Surface Bazaar Locker Permits as their own, additional payment.

Career Progression

There are three ways the Jackal's work will usually end. First, they finally meet the "prey" that can fight back. Second, they meet one or more of the Guides, specialized in spotting and hunting the Jackal's ambushes. And third, The Surface itself takes the claim of their lives, either in form of one of the deadly sun rays burning them alive or the jaws of one of the Beasts from Above. Only a few fortunate ones manage to make a bank and are smart enough to retire before they eat a bullet.
