The Zed Men
Founded in 2464, the Order of the Zed Men, more usually simply referred to as the Zed Men was a military organisation, established under the 4th dynasty of the Resource Management World Government and tasked with defending the state against subversion in all forms. Two divisions reported to the King and Queen of Earth, known as the King's Men and the Queen's Men, and the Kernel Troop in each division acted as a form of personal guard.
According to the philosophy of the 4th dynasty, the state was to be thought of as a human body, in which the Zed Men played the role of an immune system, hunting down and destroying infection before it could harm the body politic. To keep the immune system active and ready to react against any real threats, an artificial threat was maintained in the form of the Pasteracht, officially sanctioned terrorists which the Zed Men were expected to seek out and destroy to prove their own effectiveness. The ongoing "games" between these two competing forces, kept deliberately in tension, created a dangerous dynamic which reinforced the somewhat psychotic and paranoid mood of the time.
Whilst technically the Zed Men were only supposed to operate on Earth, over time they began to extend their area of operation into the Bubble, disconcerting the other members of The Solar Group.
Disbandment
The Zed Men were not well liked. Thought of as intrusive, meddling and dangerous, to an average citizen they were considered little better than the Pasteracht. They were disbanded by the 5th dynasty in 2542.
