The Forbidden Regions

The forbidden regions is a term which came into existence with the declaration of the limitation in 2348 CE. It has meaning only in relation to the bubble since it refers to everywhere in the universe that isn't part of the bubble.   The adoption of this curiously inappropriate way to describe a disproportionately vast fraction of the universe, reflects the defensive parochial mindset of humanity at the time, calling to mind the similarly dismissive and possibly apocryphal statement attributed to the editor of an English newspaper in the 19th century. "Fog in Channel, continent cut off".   The forbidden regions were opened up with the end of the limitation in 3541 when the term fell into disuse, although the colonised centre of human space continued to be known as the bubble for many years afterwards.
