Thalia Bowers

Empress Thalia Bowers

Thalia Bowers was the Empress of the Imperium Valianum from 44 to 48 PC, and the Governor-General of Valian from 35 PC until the collapse of the Tersten State in 45 PC. She was born on the urban capital world of Lordania in 4 BC, and part of the minor aristocratic Bowers family. The Bowers family moved to the newly occupied planet of Tersten in 6 PC, where they joined the Dowerbridge Family in becoming the ancestors of the modern day Pinasc aristocracy.   With the overthrow of the First Lordanian Republic and the establishment of the People's Republic of Lordania, life for the Upper Lordanians carried on much the same as it had before, but with a far greater emphasis on the military, on duty to the state, and loyalty to the Consul. Like so many of the upper class, Bowers was all too happy to let the Unitarian Party take over all aspects of society, if it meant they got to keep their power. But unlike her peers, who simply played willing bystander, Bowers immersed herself fully into the lifestyle of a Unitarian. She became a member of the People’s Protectors, the Lordanian Secret Police. With active encouragement, she became a ruthless schemer. At some point, she was introduced to the leader of the Tersten State, Katya Jefferson and Simon Hawthorne, the Governor-General of Valian.   Bowers, at some point, implicated Hawthorne in a scheme to assassinate Jefferson, and took initiative to stop him, killing and scheming her way to the position.  As Governor-General of Valian, she became a favourite of the Council of Eight for her initiative and capable nature. Under Bowers leadership, large parts of Valian were industralised, creating the coal mines of Coalspring. Early reports of Imperial Black Lung were heavily suppressed during this time.   At some point prior to the Great Revolution, Bowers visited one of the Sar'ket Ruins in Valian. In this site, the material that would become the Imperial Battle Armor was discovered, and the suit was forged just prior to the Revolution.   During the worldwide uprising, Bowers ignored her superior's demands for assistance, closing off her borders and tightening control over the Valian region. Rather than take orders, now she would give them.  Titling herself as Empress of Valian, she founded the Imperium Valianum.  Many historians consider the Imperium to be a "warlord state, with vague imperial trappings". Under her rule, Valian would grow to be the largest producer of coal on Tersten.  Quality of life declined rapidly, with mass migrations. Bowers, a capable and talented warrior-spy was no politician. Her army was strong, but it could barely feed itself.  The Battle of Bukwiza would prove to be her undoing, leading to the defeat of the Valianum Army, and her supposed death in the battle.   Many rumours persist of Bower's survival post-Bukwiza, as her body was never recovered, nor was her nigh-invulnerable power armour. Nobody saw her flee the battle, and her disappearance is subject to countless legends.  If she did survive, she remains well hidden. Perhaps for good reason, as all over Valian, effigies of her body are burnt on the anniversary of the Battle of Bukwiza, celebrating the death of such a tyrannical leader.
