Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The major languages uttered by Humans are:

Culture and cultural heritage

Humans are strongly religious and consider their own religion as the only righteous one, disapproving anyone who follows a different religion. In each of their cities, Humans have built at least one church and in The Citadel, there even is a grand Cathedral to honor their gods.   Combat and conquest also represent a major staple on the Human culture, having a long history of conflicts on their name, most notably the Human-Elf War, which saught the fall of the Elven Empire during the Third era.

Shared customary codes and values

Humans have a very hierarchic society. A Human born in a certain social rank is likely to stay in this rank for the rest of their lives.  The only way to rise above this is through extraordinary achievements or through marriage.

Average technological level

The Human civilization is currently at a medieval level when it comes to technology, but due to the influx of Dwarven technology, they are experimenting with steam-based technology, but at a far smaller scale than the Dwarves.

Common Dress code

Humans with low social status are often dressed in nothing but simple rags while the higher ranking Humans wear expensive clothing from animal pelts, velvet, and gemstones.

Art & Architecture

Arts play a significant role in Human society, where artworks from notable artists are sold for thousands of Imperial Besels. Owning many artworks is seen as a major sign of wealth and an indication of high social status.   In terms of architecture, the houses Humans live in are also representative of their social status. Lower-ranking Humans live in little more than huts made out of wood and leather while the more wealthy Humans live in grand mansions made of stone, wood, and Crimsonium.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When Humans are born, they will be going through a so-called birth ritual in which they are introduced to the Human religion. They are also  tested for any Magicka affinity and if that comes out positive, they will be dealt with accordingly and handed over to The Crimson Empire where they will spend their lives training to become an Imperial Mage or even a Sentinel.

Coming of Age Rites

When Humans mature at the age of 18, they are sent to the Military Academy in The Citadel where they receive basic combat training so they can be drafted in the case of a war. After completing this training, they will receive the choice to remain with the military or practice any other job available.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When a Human dies, they will either be cremated or buried during a funeral ritual in which all their loved ones gather and pay one final goodbye to their fallen relative.

Common Taboos

The largest taboo in Human culture is to openly wield Magicka due to the events of the Human-Elf War and the Great Reformation.

Common Myths and Legends

There is a well-known legend in Human folklore that during the Second Era, there was some interracial inbreeding between Humans and Elves and that their offspring, some kind of human-elf hybrids were able to wield Magicka as well, and their offspring as well and so on, and this eventually led to the first Humans to naturally have an affinity to wield Magicka.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

In Human culture, having a pale skin-tone is considered a sign of wealth and therefore an important beauty ideal. Next to this, some other beauty ideals are for the male to be taller than the female, and slightly lean but not too muscular.  Women are also often attracted to men with long hair, body art, and scars as an indication of their previously fought battles.   For women, common beauty ideals are that they are not very tall, not too skinny but also not too chubby, have long hair and are good cooks.

Gender Ideals

For men, it is expected that they contribute to society in some way, most likely through military service, but some men also serve as merchants, innkeepers, blacksmith or builders most notably.   Most women serve a supporting role in Human society, taking care of their homes while their husbands are out in the world. It is also very common for women to be merchants or innkeepers though.

Courtship Ideals

In Human culture, people are to respect anyone who has a higher social status than themselves. Humans with a lower social status than others are literally below them in every aspect, these higher Humans are legally entitled to request whatever they want from their lesser Humans.   Humans also have a strict combat etiquette, consisting of the following main points:
  • One does not strike an unarmed opponent.
  • In the case of a duel, fighting may only ensue with both participating parties' consent.
  • If an opponent pleads for mercy, you are to accept this plea and spare their life.
  • Your equipment is your own responsibility and no one but yourself can be held responsible for any damages to your equipment whatsoever.
