Catasoon
Catasoon is a long-barrel artillery that launchs an ammunition using the mysteriously powerful of Catastropium in a form of powder. It is developed by Royal Research Academy to be used by their military, Gunner Legion.
A sinlge Catasoon is capable to easily breach the stone wall or enemy frontlines. As of the recent development, it can breach the ships also. It has a shooting range of possible a kilometer, even though that's what they're hoping to go for as in reality, it only shot as far as a few hundred meters, but it is enough to make the enemy severse.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The barral, standing on a wooden base, was made of cast iron with a machanism to ignite the fuel. In order to use it, they must put the fuel first before the ammo, then use a hammer to smash on top of a breech where the rod, usually made of Amethium, is connected to the fuel, igniting then and launch a projectile. Sometime a chuck of crystal is put to make an powerful and assured shot, and a rod has to be changed from time to time.
By this fact, Catasoon has to be operated by multiple people, comprising of a gun loader, who load the ammo through the barrel's front end, a cleaner who clean the barral in case of an active powder which is considered so dangerous, and a smasher who hammer the cannon.
Ammunition
Several type of ammunitions are used. Firstly, the cast iron cannonball, the most common which is strong and easy to produce. It can be heat up to cause the target to sometime on fire. Secondly, the bomb, in which an amount of powder or sometime a cluster is stored tightly inside a hallow cannonballs. The characteristic of the crystal can explode itself upon impact, causing a severse damage to the certain area.
Side-Effect
Nevertheless, this invention comes a disadvantage. In every type of their arsenal, the Catasoon seem to produce most amount of Purple Smoke, more than any firearms by ten times, considering dangerous if using them in a long term. The Catasoon unit has to protect themselves by wearing masks made of linens or wools.
History
Early Development
It was the dark time for the Valonians. Their country was under tyrannical regime, and it was The Sacked to save it. According to Parlov Indus, the team leader, he got a secret mission to extract the power of a mythical stone getting from yet another secret mission. The Catasoon was the first thing he and his team had ever invented. The zooming, roaring sound coming of its muzzle gave an idea to call the gun such name. They later planned to have a smaller for person handling, which they successfully downsized it and called with a simillar name Catasia, but the cannon still be used anyway.
The time Catasoon to shine was the War of the Sacked, the 15 years campaign. It was believed that Catasoon were responsible for the Breach of the Lake Gios Dam in 3 BVE, the military accident which cause the most davastated flood in their history.
Imperial Era
Since then, Catasoon had been used in several wars such as theAnriv-Vinor War, and the Iron Surplus Campaign. As the only country to produce such thing, the usage is a privillage to the Valonians only in order to keep them superior, from weapon to powders.
In 43 VE, however, the empire had agree to give Catasoons and other crystal-related weapons to the Irgia Republic, making it the second country to get so. This resulted in hiring blacksmiths from around the country to produce them in a massive scale, which was supervised by their smithing guild Ferrum Faber.
