Purple Smoke

Purple Smoke is an uncommon condition that affects those who breathe a burnt Catastropium fume for a very long time. This occurs to the soldiers of Gunner Legion.

Causes

During the gunfire, the activated purple powder are ejected from the ignitor hole or the barrel at high speed. It's light enough to float for a little while in which soldier can inhale without noticing.

A fume consists of crystal gas which is toxic, and a bigger shard with a sharp edge, which can cut any surface they travel, or stuck on organ's wall such as trachea.

Symptoms

With enough Purple Smoke, the effect may cause on the respiration system. The symptoms are cough, shortness of breathing, or in the worst case internal breeding. It may result in pulmonary diseases such as silicosis.

Purple Smoke doesn't affect the digestion system though. The shard cannot be digested but it can travel further to damage the intestine. It may result in excreting with the blood but that's pretty rare.

Treatment

These symptoms are of what come from sterillized type of purple powder, which it isn't dangerous as it used to. Proper resting or eating some gooey substence like honey can reduce the symptom.

Prevention

As it is a long-term condition it isn't easy to get. For the estimation, the frontline troops must rapidly fire for a few consecutive hours to generate enough amount of purple smoke to take an instant effect. Nevertheless, the military need to reduce that chance as much as possible.

Guns are later designed to reduce the smoke ejected. They have to schedule each deployment and firing as well as a duration between wars. If not so, they may have to wear a veil made of weaven fibers.

History

The condition was first discovered during the War of the Sacked, and it was the pure powder they was using in combat. It was a small used but the effect was noticable. It wasn't until about a few years after when they discovered the sterillization.

The condition can be seen obviously during the Anriv-Vinor War, in which the Valonian's fully gunned legion attack the nrighbor within a few years.

What happens if it is not sterilized?

This would be a completely different story. According to scientific experiments by Royal Research Academy a few decades ago, even the smallest shard is able to grow itself.

If unlucky, any liquid substance that contains water inside the body is enough to feed such tiny shards to grow into a cluster that blocks any passage or stabs the interior. This cause not only such acute internal breeding but also suffocation. Drinking water will surely guarantee their demise.
