Wine available in the Great Western Empire

Written by David_Ulph

Wines are generally the more expensive drinks available in the Great Western Empire and so a glass will normally only be seen in the hands of a noble or successful merchant. The following are a selection of wines and brandies with a description and note of average cost.

Wines

Aramon
A light, bubbly wine made by the Losalfar Conclave of Candlekeep. Considered quite a delicacy by vintners across Elgerlia. Bottle: 30 Hulti, Glass: 8 Hulti
Aquitaine Flamewine
A spiced wine in strong demand across all the GWE, with a strong citrus flavour which can be over-whelming to the uninitiated. Bottle: 30 Hulti, Glass: 10 Hulti
Blood of the Raven
A salty, black wine used in the ceremonies by the Temples of the Survivor Gods. It supposedly passes dream-visions of the Gods to the most favoured of the faithful. Bottle: 100 Hulti, Glass: 30 Hulti
Bloodwine
A wine from Gliniswari, this wine has a heavy body and deep-red tone. The taste is lush and full, with a slight afterbite. The wine comes from a shrivelled variety of grape that grows on cursed twisted vines. It is said that the grapes are possessed by the spirits of Bludalfar who were killed by Blood Chrysalis. True or not, Bloodwine has a very distinct flavour. Bottle: 2 Hulti, Glass: 10 Qucri
Blueberry Wine
Produced by an Order of Saint Vortarius Monastery in Southern Dagorland. Bottle: 50 Hulti, Glass: 12 Hulti
Dalriadan Wine
A rich hearty wine popular across Skìrah, brewed in Dawnsmarch Hold and in great demand across much of the GWE. Bottle: 8 Hulti, Glass: 2 Hulti
Highdale Mordwynnian Wine
A more common wine than Mudwine exported all across the GWE. The berry taste on this vintage is an acquired taste. Bottle: 2 Qucri, Glass: 40 Galso
Jhuild
A Sanarosi export known in the GWE as Firewine because of its high alcohol content. Bottle: 200 Hulti, Glass: 20 Hulti
Languedoc Champagne
A bubbly white wine, fit for serving in tall glasses at events in royal and imperial palaces. Bottle: 10 Hulti, Glass: 2 Hulti
Middenfire Dew
From the valley to the west of Blackoaks, this dark wine leaves an aftertaste like cherries and blackroot. Bottle: 4 Hulti, Glass: 16 Qucri
Montague Strongwine
One of the finest wines produced in the Vineyard Coast, a thick bodied wine favoured by King Padrig Hawksperch himself and highly regarded in his court. Bottle: 50 Hulti, Glass: 12 Gold
Montague Sweetwine
This light fruity wine is extremely common throughout the GWE, but unpopular in it's manufacturing region of the Vineyard Coast. Bottle: 10 Hulti, Glass: 2 Hulti
Mordwynnian Wine
An acquired taste, this bitter spiced wine is considered best served with zesty food found on the southern coasts of Elgerlor. Bottle, 10 Hulti, Glass: 2 Hulti
Mudwine
Strong, sour wine of poor quality but great potency. The most common wine that is served in the homes and taverns of lowborn attempting to portray a rather dignified look. Bottle: 5 Qucri, Glass: 1 Qucri
Narbonne Dark
From the Vineyard Coast, this dark, heavy and sweet brew can leave the heartiest drinker in an alcoholic stupor after a single glass. Once considered a fine wine, but aspiring merchants failing to replicate their own led to a sharp drop in quality. Bottle: 5 Hulti (20 Hulti if proven to be from Narbonne), Glass: 16 Qucri (5 Hulti if proven to be from Narbonne)
Purple Grapewine
A mass produced wine from the Vineyard Coast. This wine, famous for it's bitter aftertaste, can be found in most taverns across the GWE. Bottle: 5 Hulti, Glass: 1 Hulti
Saxcorn Dry
This red wine is very dry and should be served at cellar temperature to best exhibit its woody undertones and slightly berrylike taste. Bottle: 12 Qucri, Glass: 7 Qucri
Silver Aquitaine Sherry
An extremely common, mass produced wine, whose primary advantage is it will get you drunk quickly and cheaply. Bottle: 6 Qucri, Glass: 140 Galso
Spiced Wine
From the Faar Isles, spiced wine is a taste treat and a sovereign remedy for many ailments, including nausea, cough, and huskiness of the throat. Fennel, Raisin or Cinnamon Spiced Wine Bottle: 12 Qucri; Anise, Nutmeg or Clove Spiced Wine Bottle: 16 Qucri
Topaz
The most common Sanarosi wine, this yellow-amber is produced in enough quantity to make it on the table of almost every tavern in seemingly all of Terralba. Bottle: 1 Hulti, Glass: 6 Qucri
Traveller's Wine
A surprisingly sweet wine with a slightly nutty aftertaste. Its wonderful taste and full body are further enhanced for romantic evenings by its prominent silver and green luminescence, and stored in ceramic bottles and kegs to prevent the hue from fading during transport. Bottle: 5 Hulti, Glass: 1 Hulti
Wintersblood Wine
This seemingly magically enhanced wine from Talvel's Point is cold no matter how long it is set out for. It has a unique strong-sweet taste and it's purplish-blue hue leads to jokes that the grapes that go into making it "caught a chill". Usually served in small quantities with a dessert. Bottle: 12 Hulti, Glass: 4 Hulti

Brandies

Blackbottom Rum
A brandy, despite it's name and cheap quality, is famous for tasting the better the more you drink it. Bottle: 2 Hulti, Glass: 1 Hulti
Summer Queen's Brandy
Brewed once a year during Midsummer, this liquor is always in high demand during the Dagor cultural festival that gives it it's name. Bottle: 20 Hulti, Glass: 3 Hulti
Quartz Brandy
A brandy made from swedes and cauliflower. A unique taste, usually drunk on a dare followed by a chaser. Bottle: 5 Hulti, Glass: 10 Qucri
200 Galso = 1 Qucri, 20 Qucri = 1 Hulti
Currency Equivalents
The costs conveyed in this page are in Imperial Hulti, which was the official currency of the GWE. However, every region had their own internal currencies depending on culture. Stated here are the conversion between them.

  • 1 Imperial Hulti = 0.9 Mordwynnian Wahbe / 13.5 Gasni / 13 Gasni, 95 Lacka
  • 1 Imperial Hulti = 0.75 Korgic Gold / 11.25 Silver / 11 Silver, 63 Copper
  • 1 Imperial Hulti = 2.5 Mylrondian Kihru / 2 Kihru, 12.5 Tecto / 2 Kihru, 12 Tecto, 98 Pisqo
  • 1 Imperial Hulti = 0.5 Slinzirian Kihru / 15 Tecto
Example
Take the popular Montague Sweetwine. In Dagorland and in cross-empire trade, a bottle costs 10 Hulti. Let's travel from Dagorland and travel west on the Great Imperial Road. In Hellaland, the bottle will cost 12 Gold, 7 Silver, 20 Copper (Usually rounded up to 13 Gold). In Mordwynn, the bottle will cost 9 Wahbe. In Skìrah, the bottle will cost 7 Gold, 7 Silver, 125 Copper (Usually rounded up to 8 Gold). In Mylrondia, the bottle will cost 25 Kihru. In the Faar Isles, the bottle will cost 5 Gold.

So, if you want to buy the cheapest Montague Sweetwine, spend 5 Gold for a bottle in the Faar Isles and gain a profit by selling it for 25 Kihru in Mylrondia.
