The Great Western Empire

The Empire of Those Free

Created by David_Ulph

Structure

Ruling the GWE is the Emperor, who is a true male descendent of the House Dragorlan. Much like a King, the current Emperor must declare his heir before his death, either a son or a true brother.   Below the Emperor are the Imperial Representatives, who are the authorised Kings and rulers of each individual region. They are given slight autonomy but ultimately hold no authority against the decisions of their Emperor.   Beneath the IRs are the Grand Council, who are the official heads of all registered noble houses including both the IRs and the Emperor himself. The Emperor's Council is selected from the Grand Council and act as advisers to his reign.

Territories

The GWE originated in the three regions that make up Elgerlor. At the height of the Empire's power, it's territory covered the entire continent of Elgerlia, the Faar Isles, and stretched into the Untamed Lands subjugating the lands of the Dankor into a puppet Kingdom of Durna.

Military

The main military of the Empire are the Imperial Legions which are a standing army of immense size. The Legions, when mustered will always be sent to wherever the front-lines may be.   Throughout the GWE itself, each noble is expected to raise a militia in the defence of the realm. In every settlement also, there will always be a Company of City Watchmen that uphold the Imperial Law and add to the defence of the realm.   The Churches of the Survivor Gods employ armies of Clerics who are specifically chosen by a patron God to serve their Church. When not on a specific Crusade, the Clerics answer to the High Priest or Priestess of their religion. The Order of Saint Vortarius similarly employs holy militias, however these are more extensive than the Church's, employing mercenaries usually illegal under Imperial Law and the service of Paladins.

Religion

When it was first founded, it was the Diamen Pantheon of the Survivor Gods that held the place of the official state religion. Within each region of Elgerlia, differing Survivor Gods Pantheons were worshipped in parallel with the Human Diamen Pantheon. Druidic Animism and the Revenant worship of Death were also respected by the GWE.   However, after the Great Schism - an internal conflict between the differing religions of the Church of Diamen and the Order of Saint Vortarius - the monotheistic worship of Saint Vortarius and the One True God officially replaced the Survivor Gods. While this change didn't affect the peasantry all too much (merely seeing an increase in Saint Vortarius preachers on the streets), worship of any other deity was strictly forbidden for the aristocracy and the Emperor was granted the title Defender of the Faith.

Foreign Relations

The GWE holds strong interconnected relations with the Confederacy of Cryptcities that are officially independent under areas ruled by the Empire. In return for gifting the corpses of criminals and allowing unrestricted travel within the GWE for all Revenants, the Cryptcities ensure the safekeeping of the dead and promise to help in the protection of the GWE during the prophesied End Times.   Over the Elgerlian Sea, the GWE has mixed relations with the southern Susros Dynasties. The Holy Myconthren Empire, the land of the Thren Dynasty, is situated at the other end of the Faar Straight - the only known completely safe route across the Elgerlian Ocean - meaning the GWE holds strong trading relations with this Shahdom. A mix of the HME's uncanny opportunism and many heavily one-sided trade relations, means that while most in the GWE would rather die than admit it, the Thren Dynasty have a unique stranglehold on Elgerlian politics and the survival of the GWE's economics entirely. Taking advantage of this fact, the HME have multiple pirate outposts strategically located on trade routes knowing that if the GWE do anything about the piracy threat, they could lose their most important trading partner. Because of this, the GWE has significantly healthier relations with the Thren's rivals, the Myco Dynasty and the Shahdom of Mycon who tackle the Thren pirates on their own accord.   In north Mylrondia is the remaining Vampyre Kingdom of Veperit in the Mistlands. While in the past, there have been regular hostilities between the GWE and Veperit, by the time of the late Third Age there is now a non-aggression pact between the powers. On the Vampyre's last attempt to disrupt the GWE, the Imperial forces managed to capture an entire bloodline, the Manan, within the walls of the Capitol and are now kept as minor nobles in the Citadel. If any of the bloodlines were to attack the GWE again, especially the Kingdom of Veperit, then the entire ancient Manan Bloodline will be killed without hesitation.
