The Cauldron

The Cauldron is an active somma volcano on the peninsula of Teel. It is the highest point of the Black Teeth of Gendal mountain range, which is mainly formed from magma which the Cauldron had erupted. The tip of the Cauldron also marks the highest reachable point on the peninsula, though it is not the highest geographical point (which is located at the Almas Peak). Undying people from Teel remember that the volcano was significantly bigger once as it is today. The top of the mointain collapsed more than 100 Hit Waves ago, leaving a caldera of 2 km width, where a new volcanic cone has formed.

1. Geological Development

The magma chamber of the Cauldron lies around 1400 meters under the sea level of the Ago Sea and holds an open lake of molten lava. Another collapse of the hollow formation is predicted for the near future (in geological terms). The new cone frequently erupts solidified rock that settles down in the West of the caldera plateau, thereby the process slowly increases the Black Teeth of Gendal archipelago stone by stone.

The Dark Waves of Gendal

Old Juru people witnessed the last collapse of the Cauldron over 850 years ago. The exact date of the eruption is untraceable, because the linear calendar in Teel was introduced several centuries later. They say that the event turned the whole region black (the mountain range in the West, as well as the Black March on the northern border of the mountains) and the sun disappeared for many Waves afterwards.

2. Nature

The region is more or less a wasteland with a dry and rocky ground and minimum temperatures of 35 degrees (Celsius). Hot springs and mudpots scatter on the ground. Only the Undying are able to climb the caldera without harm, where the temperature rises above 50 degrees. Consequentially, the number of animals and plants in the Cauldron area is limited to just a few.   Flora
  • Whistle Thistle
  • Flakadock
  Fauna
  • Ritch
  • Marv

3. Population

The Cauldron area is sparsely populated by just a hand full of Undyings who prefer to be left alone. Citizen Nats from the Free City of Teel was the first mortal to develop a market in the region near the Cauldron Rift location.

4. Myths

Many myths grow around the fiery maw of the Cauldron and the mountain range below. It is proven that the black color of the surrounding area actually comes from the eruption prior to the Dark Waves of Gendal. Beyond that, there are more wild beliefs about the volcano:   4.1 Gendal
Old Juru horror stories revolve around the giant sea monster Gendal. The stories say that the dragon-like monstrosity emerged from the pyroclastic hell inside the volcano when it erupted around 850 years ago and disappeared into the Ago Sea to feed and to grow. Some superstitious people still fear his return – they say that Gendal tried to swallow the whole peninsula several times in the past and some day he will return big enough to accomplish his feast. Up to this point, there is no evidence that a monster of such an enormous size has ever existed in reality.     4.2 The Secret Depths of Feu
Some of the Undying still remember that the inside of the Cauldron was once inhabited by at least two Juru houses. Although some people claim to belong to the ancient pyrophilic groups who fled when the Dark Waves loomed, many myths say that there are still some Juru living inside the volcano in the marooned town named Feu.
