Wave

The Wave

The Wave denotes the seasonal flooding of the Infinite Sands, the Ochintis Dynasty and the borders of the peninsula of Teel. It strikes in intervals of seven days and triggers several cyclic natural events on the continent. Beyond that, the seasonal Waves are the basis for the old and the new calendar of Teel.

The Hit Waves

Due to the tidal force of the orbiting luminaries (the Indi moon and the Capensis moon), the Wave grows to a catastrophic Hit Wave at an interval of 30 years. The Hit Wave regularly floods parts of the land and it takes several days for the water to flow back into the Ago Sea.

1. Dynamics and Seasons

The Wave isolates the peninsula of Teel from the rest of the continent, for it makes the Infinite Sands unpassable, even for the roughest of the Undying. It floods the whole East and the South of the Infinite Sands for several hours, leaving clams and fish that dry out very quickly once the water is gone. Subsequently to the Wave, the Infinite Sands turn into the Vermillion Clouds for almost one day, before the land withers from the heat and the bloom turns into brown sand again.   Seasons in the Infinite Sands
Day 1 The Wave
The water level of the Ago Sea rises dramatically for a few hours. The Wave usually appears at sunset and flows back to the sea over night.
Day 2 Blooming of the Vermillion Clouds
The Infinite Sands turn into a vivid habitat with Vermillion Bloom covering the area as far as the eye can reach. By sunset, the plants dry out and the migratory animals move on to other locations.
Day 3 - Day 7 Dry Season
The vestiges of the blooming fade into sand. During the dry season, the deserted area is dead and unpassable for mortals.
Day 8 The next Wave floods the land
People gather in beach areas to watch the Wave come and go. The Shenbuu Festival takes place and another circle of bloom and decay begins.

2. Origins

There are plenty of Juru and Harkom based tales about the origins of the seasonal Wave. The most plausible stories attribute the seasonal movement of masses of water to the two moons that orbit the land. Most of the traditional Jurus like to believe that the Wave appears whenever Indi or Capensis plunge into the Ago Sea beyond the horizon. As fantastic as this stories may seem, they contain some truth within their core: It is a proven fact that the Hit Wave only strikes when both moons are apparent at the sky, which happens only once in 30 years.

3. The Wave Calendar

The old and the new time reckoning in Teel is based on the coming and going of the seasonal Waves. Before the arrival of the Settlers, the calendar in Teel went in circles with a span from hit wave to hit wave (1560 Waves).   The modern Calendar
Exactly every 1560th Wave turns into a Hit Wave which is named after the first moon that appears in the sky on that day (Indi and Capensis alternate from hit wave to hit wave). This time period is divided by the 30 ancient Juru signs of the zodiac, ergo the year changes after 52 waves. The Settlers marked the Stranding event as the beginning of the new linear calendar which is divided into Waves and years.
