Scarred Peak Goblins

Named after their rugged mountain home along the northern shores of the Blue Spruce River, the Scarred Peak Goblins are a confederation of several smaller tribes living in the Grey Peaks. Famous for their destruction of the original colony at Rathgar have colonized Azermathia over the past two centuries. Unable to fend off these invaders, they have been pushed further and further back, out of all but spruce filled northern fringes of the Eastwood in the foothills of the mountains and into the jagged peaks themselves.

With less territory to cover the various tribes have less game to hunt and have shrunk slowly over the years until some have less than two dozen in total - afar cry from the teaming hundreds that used to occupy every mud and wattle village. Still, these Goblins remain fiercely independent, not knowing the yoke of Orkish enslavement that many of their cousins to the north suffer. That freedom has allowed them to develop a rudimentary society complete with basic agriculture - some tribes grow barley and others potatoes - as well as a loose political system. Each tribe is headed by a headman, selected generally for his strength but staying in power only through his cunning. These headmen regularly treat with neighboring tribes and relations vary from uneasy alliances to double crossing raids. The fact that they regularly talk, however, prevents all out war, something that the fragile tribes could not afford.

Individual tribes often send raiding parties west, into the Hinterlands to raid the settlements there. Many raids result in the usual burning, murder, and plunder, but clever headmen have, over the years, learned to target specific technologies, such as steel weapons, barrels, and other hand-crafted goods that raise the standard of living in a particular tribe. Occasionally a stronger headmen will bind multiple tribes together for raids large enough that the Republican Army must march northward and root them out of the forests. The most successful of these headmen have learned to avoid direct confrontation, instead using guerilla tactics against their larger, more heavily armored foes.
