Sarya Saffron Character in Tarien | World Anvil

Sarya Saffron

Tavern Owner

With luscious dark hair, fierce dark eyes, and bronzed skin that almost glows (the effect of some plant oil she religiously applies), Sarya cuts a striking figure as she slides from table to table her Wargun restaurant, the Fire and Flatbreads. With a scant dozen small, round tables crammed into dining room that always feels dark even on the brightest day - Sarya keeps the windows covered with heavy curtains year round - the restaurant bustles from midday until early evening. Her regular have learned long ago what the casual diners - generally middling merchants, their caravan guards, and Cavalry new to town - all seem to need to learn. Keep your hands to yourself around the proprietress. Those patrons prone to friendly pinch or smack that at which a more docile serving wenches might merely grimace earns a slap of the wrist - either by Sarya's hand or her blade - in the Flatbread and Falafel. Those that complain about this admonishment might even find themselves wearing a cup of the cheap, sour wine that the restaurant serves, the cost of the beverage of course added to their bill.

Her unwillingness to compromise dates back at least a decade when Sarya, a willowy lass of sixteen winters, had accompanied her father, a well respected Dharjan horse trader on the long trip across the Great Belt to the Malpighien Steppes on a trip to acquire some of the best Zennonaize horses that he hoped to crossbreed with fine Carbothian ones. Sarya managed to fall fiercely in love with Cavalryman somewhere in the southern Confederacy and for Fahrom only knows, ran away from her father with the man to Wargun. Two winters later, the scoundrel - who's name she never utters - having left her for another, even younger lass, Sarya found herself alone in a foreign city with barely two silvers to her name. Living on the streets, borrowing money from the Northwest Syndicate (with whom, if rumors are to believed, she still maintains close ties), and investing solely in fiery peppers and wheat, she began selling stuffed flatbreads. Two winters later, on what she claims was her twentieth birthday, she had accumulated enough wealth to purchase a foodcart. The restaurant came another two later.
