Inn of Many Names

No sign actually reads "The Inn of Many Names", though of course the inn doesn't have a sign, it was stolen some years back when it was called the Silver Tankard on account of the cheap silver paint that the proprietor at the time on had on hand when he put the tenth coat of paint over it. That owner had won the inn at a game of cards which the previous owner considered a blessing of Kayla's own. "The place never closes," he said, handing over the crumpled scroll that served as the inn's deed, "And I don't think I have slept for the six moons that I've owned it." That was several owners and names ago, before the Whistling Pony and the Dancing Bear and the Upside Down Bard all took their turn as signless names, their existence spread via word of mouth through Katzpütch like the news of a fat purse on a passed out drunk who had probably stumbled on his way from the Left Handed Mistress or Stuttering Soulmeliti or whatever it was called at the time.

Only those who has spent a few winters in the City of Evershifting Streets actually call the single storied, stone tavern the Inn of Many Names. Newcomers and those passing through generally refer to it by its current monicker and those who have spent longer periods of time in the city make it a matter of pride to know its current name. It is, after all, one of four permanent buildings in Katzpütch. How hard is it to remember the name of four buildings? Think of how much backbreaking labor went into hauling those stones down from the Rheuthengage Mountains, after all. And besides, there aren't any rooms for let so why call it an inn at all?

Nearly thirty paces wide the inside of is divided by a low half-wall that partitions off a busy kitchen where whatever the stew of the day is made, served of course with hard biscuits that, if not drenched in stew, are liable to break a patron's teeth. No refunds, no credit and patrons accept all liability, or so says the graffiti scrawled on the wall in blue Eldorian and red Galencian lettering. There are an odd number of tables, some round, some square, some tall, and some low. Some of these are surrounded by chairs and stools while others stand alone, serving only a space to hold tankards of ale - the inn doesn't offer wine or mead.

Inn of Many Names

Despite its poor menu that venerable age of the rushes on the floor, the inn is always busy. Katzpütch is, after all, the city that never sleeps and the inn serves as a place for sellswords and laborers to get a roof over their heads when it rains and out of the sun when it doesn't. News and rumors overflow from the taproom like well-watered ale and there is always a game of dice or cards for those looking for a way to pass the time. Despite its reputation as a rough place, however, no matter the name of the current owner, there are always a pair of burly bouncers happy to toss out anyone causing too much trouble.
