Great Flight
Elynthi Retreat
The Great Flight is used to describe the retreat of the Elynthi people across the Darien Plain - a distance of nearly 150 leagues - before settling in along the Bay of New Hope in what is now Shal'Ashen. The journey, which began in the late autumn, lasted throughout the winter which proved both a blessing and a curse. The blessing was that it the cold wind and snow kept Soulmeliti forces from harassing the retreating Elynthi forces. As a result, what began as a running battle for nearly a full moon saw its last serious skirmish around Division Ridge as the Scroll of Years switched from the Year of the Hare to the Year of Raven. By the time Elynthi reached the shelter of the forests along the western edge of the Sea of Dreams they had lost half of their number. When Ag'ralo Moeynshiem's Your arrow slew their leader Merdenkali Shal'Ratzen, it was almost too much for the defeated Elynthi to bear and hundreds took hemlock potions to end their own suffering. A small cadre of priests who had embraced Merdenkali's teachings reached out to Nosferian who gave them the strength to not only carry on but seek vengeance. They raised the spirits of their fallen kin - spirits that are rumored to still live in the Blighted Wood - and by year's end, not a single Soulmeliti was left on the peninsula that now bear's Merdenkali's name.
