Ashe C2 Episode 6 - Revlar Groundtooth

Previously on Liters of Tomorrow

It's summer in the town of Ashe, the feast of Calwyn is taking place in the month of Archalos. One of the last great festivals before the town prepares for winter. The young ranger Wes found himself dreaming of the strange woman he met in the Ashen forest only days ago. As she leered over his prone body she stabbed him in the side. He awoke to find a strange mark embedded in his skin of a tree being eaten by a serpent. As he made his way down stairs he shared some coffee with his mentor and guardian Jaron Dartmoor. Jaron reminded him to look after the strange elven man who had recently come to town. A sun elf named Crashe. He also mentioned that the fighters guild known as the Red Wulves had sent some officers, they had mentioned Crashe in their inquiries. As always with the Red Wulves that could mean impressment or arrest.
That morning Crashe also found himself enveloped in a strange dream. He found himself in another time in the body of an elven man he did not recognize. He chased an assassin into an alleyway to rescue a girl. She mouthed a name when she saw him but he couldn't make it out. After the dream he awoke and headed down to the common room of the Constellation Inn.
Wes found him there and joined him for breakfast.  Two members of the Red Wulves spotted Crashe quickly as Crashe ate his meal obliviously.  They mentioned that they were tasked with finding the dangerous criminal known as Revlar Groundtooth and bring him in to the authorities alive.  Revlar and his Fang Grinders have been raiding the western road stealing from carriages and traders.  Realizing that these raiders were dangerous and posed a threat to others Crashe agreed to accompany the Red Wulves on their mission.
Acquiring some horses from the Storvant stables the team set out to find Revlar and capture him.  On the road they were assaulted by wereravens.  Wes had met some of their number before and it was becoming clear that he was a target of theirs for some mysterious reason.  With some expert archery from Wes and the guild known as Ondar the team brought down the ravens and continued on to Vela'Rus, a mining town with plenty of scoundrels to ferret out some information.
Renting some rooms from the local inn the team headed to the Black Lung Bar to see if anyone had seen Revlar.  Crashe used his disguise kit to change his appearance and slyly wormed his way into a conversation with some miners, one of whom was a dwarf.  Unfortunately he came on too strong and tipped his hand.  He quickly changed out of his disguise and returned as Crashe the fighter to the same bar patrons who now thought he was some kind of NARC.  Wes and Balia looked on in horror and quickly removed him from the situation.  Chalking the experience up to a bit of a blunder Crashe walked back to the inn to come up with a new plan.  Now looking like a mark, he was jumped from behind by two thieves who had overheard the conversation.  Wes you had followed to check up on him and you see the two figures tailing him.

Plot points/Scenes

Ondar and Balia coerce Crashe to hunt down the dangerous criminal known as Revlar Groundtooth.
[DM Note: Revlar ground tooth and his criminal band are hunting for the shield of the Everfighter, amongst other magical items and expensive goods. Revlar claims that the shield is an ancient relic and will give him the means to claim the leadership of Clan Raspgrinder.]
Revlar's group is called the fang grinders and they are accomplished fighters but not the best thieves.
Vela'Rus and the Black Lung Bar -
Premalkin Po meets with Wess and tries to get information about the unicorn from him.
Revlar and his team are in the Black Leaf Glen.  A grotto surrounded by dark leafy trees that is a common smugglers den.  The location is known by a few who have traveled in thieves guilds and sits only a few miles off of the main Western road.  They have been taking entire carriages looking for loot and are clearly looking for something.  It is in between Vela'Rus and Porsk.
A night in Vela'Rus
The sky is clear and the stars and the moons shine bright over the rough dirt streets of Vela'Rus.  A few lanterns with dull flames sit on metal sconces near the center of town.  The cool night air sits still around you as hundreds of crickets and other insects chirp and buzz around you.  The two men move quietly, and with much skill as they make their way to Crashe.  The first one is a dwarven man though light on his feet, the second one is a halfling man with a dark knit cap on. Wes you see all of this going down what would you like to do?
[DM Note: if either of the thieves survive the encounter they are not affiliated with any guild. The dwarf is Mert Tragon and the Halfling man is Silas Willow.  They know of Revlar and his fang grinders and are pretty sure he is using the Black Leaf Glen as his hideout.]
On the road to Porsk the sky is a dull gray and a light drizzle falls all around you.  The temperature is warm enough but the humidity and the precipitation are annoyances.  The horses canter at a good pace though on the hard packed dirt road.  The road is wide enough for two carriages and the vegetation on the sides is tamped down or cut several yards away from the road.  Your information gleaned from the people of Vela'Rus give you a good idea of what to look for to find the Glen.
A carriage pulled by white horses can be seen off in the distance up the road.  [DM Note: Perception check to see the logo on the side.  It is an East Tellenheim company logo.]

Themes

After they find the glen they battle REvlar. Remember that he and his crew are standing on or near the carriages and perception checks to see the barrels of tanglefoot or explosives that can be set off with good ranged shots. After the battle they will be met by Premalkin Po who has been following them with ravens. He is looking for the Unicorn, though this score is interesting as well! When they get back to Ashe, he has framed WEs for murder, Zinjah Sheeth with an artificer poison arrow sticking out of her back

Structure

Exposition

As you look for the markers that tell where the glen is someone must make a Nature check DC 16
A failure means the group goes past it and doesn’t realize it for at least an hour as they near Porsk or Vela’Rus.
As you approach the glen you make your way through thick brush with dark brown leaves. Taller trees mask the opening as well with stringy branches that hang low like a willow. The leaves of the tree are also a very dark green, almost black in color.
Roll Stealth checks versus the dwarves perception.
As you find the clearing you peer through the leaves and see a wide field of 50 yards or so and circular. On the far right grazing and tied to some trees are six horses. They seem in good shape and not distressed. Four carriages in different states stand in the center of the clearing, you can see the wagon wheel marks on the dirt floor from where they were wheeled in from the road. A series of flexible bushes seem to snap back after the wagons go over them. On the carriages, inspecting them are five dwarves.
Dwarf number One on the ground seems to be barking orders to the rest and he fits the description of Revlar. dwarf number 2 balances on the second carriage near looking over some bundles tied on top. Dwarf number 3 is inside carriage three rummaging through a chest. Dwarf number four is standing on carriage 1 untying some leather straps and dwarf five stands amongst three large barrels on the ground near the front of the train.
  Perception check!
1-10 no new information
11-15 you peer closely at the barrels in front of dwarf five and see some warning signs of flames
16-25 You see that the barrel at dwarf number 2’s feet is marked as tanglefoot
Loot found amongst the carriages after the battle.   As the sun sits low on the horizon a cool breeze moves past you. Reminding you that Autumn is just around the corner. The dwarves lay on the ground or trussed up and immobile. You start going through the four different carriages and doing some inventory. Carriage one is clearly marked with the symbol of the East Tellenheim Company logo. It still has four chests tied with leather straps in it’s belly. As you remove the leather restraints you see that they are locked. [DC 16 with thieves tools to unlock. They can also be bashed open with a DC 17 strength check]
Don't forget this weird small chest -
The chest is about 1.5' high and 2.5' foot wide.  It is ringed with strange metal symbols all around it and it is locked with an arcane lock. Trevelyan Focus [our macguffin for the next year or so. The Lord Darkhorse will be looking for this as well as the other Fallen] 2 Flashbangs, teleportation cube, The Everfighter shield
[Inside the chests are four bolts of fine silk from Dragon Mouth, 10 bottles of wine, Cabernet from the Felos region of north of Penthos. 20 lbs.Tobacco from lamborginus and 3 cases of rolled cigars, as well as an entire serving set of Copenhaus Porcelain.]       The second carriage is marked with the Rodrigues Hortalez company logo a rival trade company. Their are two passengers that lay dead and two chests full of very expensive clothing. You also find three barrels of explosive powder, a hog’s head of Tanglefoot, and four barrels of grain.       The third carriage is unmarked but well made. Possibly a personal carriage of some noble. [DC 15 Investigation check reveals markings of House Quail, It is from Porsk the personal carriage of the lady who rules there.]. You find 35 gold, and 74 silver as well as four masterwork throwing knives hidden in the door. The carriage itself is still in driving shape and requires at least two horses but is built for four.       The fourth carriage is smoldering on the inside and appears to have been fire trapped to keep the dwarves from taking it. What happened to the driver or passengers is unknown.
